route
The route ran mainly in an easterly direction through the departments of Seine-Maritime , Eure , Oise , Somme and Aisne . The profile of this stage was largely flat, there were no significant gradients and no mountain ratings. The intermediate sprint was held in Breteuil .
Race course
The French Sports Minister Valérie Fourneyron gave the starting shot in Rouen . Immediately after the race was opened, the French Mathieu Ladagnous and Julien Simon , the Spaniard Pablo Urtasun and the Belgian Jan Ghyselinck broke away . The lead grew rapidly and leveled off at around 5:40 minutes, only to gradually decrease again. The intermediate sprint in Breteuil was decided by Ladagnous; The fastest in the field was Mark Cavendish .
After 140 kilometers, the breakaway group had a lead of 2:15 minutes, 25 kilometers from the finish line was 1:15 minutes. Teams Sky and BMC in particular set the pace in the field, but it was quite possible that the outliers could make it to the finish as they still had a 30-second lead five kilometers before the end of the stage.
Just under three kilometers from the finish, a mass crash occurred in which several dozen riders were involved, including Tyler Farrar and Peter Sagan . On the last 300 meters of the home straight, the front of the field finally caught up with the outliers. Like the day before, the German André Greipel won the sprint for victory .
Fabian Cancellara was able to slip the Maillot jaune on for the 27th time . He holds the record for the driver who led the overall standings for most days without having won the tour. The previous record was achieved by René Vietto in the 1930s.
