Breteuil (also called Breteuil-sur-Noye) is a French municipality with 4340 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Oise in the region of Hauts-de-France . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Clermont and the canton of Saint-Just-en-Chaussée .
history
Breteuil is north of the Oise in the Noye valley on Route nationale 1, halfway between Beauvais and Amiens . The place has been inhabited since Gallo-Roman times. In the Middle Ages it developed around the castle of the Counts of Breteuil and the Abbey of Notre-Dame de Breteuil, founded in 1035. The castle was razed in the 15th century, so that only the castle hill still exists today, on which town houses were built in the 19th century. The abbey has also only been in ruins since the revolution .
