Daler Mehndi ( Panjabi : ਦਲੇਰ ਮਹਿੰਦੀ * 18th August 1967 in Patna , Bihar ) is an Indian Bhangra - and pop - singer . He studied Punjab music. His first album broke the sales records in India. Since 1995 he has recorded many successful albums in India and has often appeared in Bollywood films as a singer. In recent years he has had increasing international success, which has allowed him to tour the United States . In addition to his singing career, Mehndi is known as a philanthropist who campaigns for beautification work in Delhi and helps earthquake victims.

Mehndi was born and raised as a Sikh in Patna, northern India. He began to sing at the age of five and learned ragas and shabads from the Adi Granth . From the age of 14 he learned tabla , harmonium and tanpura from his uncle Raahat Ali Khan Saheb. Mehndi married in 1986 and now has three children. After his wedding, Mehndi moved to San Francisco and worked as a taxi driver before moving back to India in 1991 and forming a band . At first he sang in Ghaselen , which were inspired by the poets Qateel Shifai and Firaq Gorakhpuri .

In 2003, Mehndi and six other people were charged with bringing people to western countries by making false promises and cheating out of substantial sums of money. In March 2018, he was sentenced to two years in prison by the Patalia Court. The singer and his brother Shamsher were charged with illegally smuggling people across borders as members of his dance company. Daler was arrested after the case began and released on bail a few days later. Mehndi has announced that it will appeal.
