Veer and Zaara - The Legend of a Love ( Hindi , वीर-ज़ारा, Vīr-Zārā) is a Bollywood film set in India and Pakistan and released on November 12, 2004. His English subtitle A Love Legend (= a love legend) clarifies the main plot of this blockbuster.
action
The film tells the story of Veer Pratap Singh, squadron leader of the Indian Air Force (life saving), and Zaara Hayat Khan from Pakistan.
The two get to know each other on a rescue mission in India. Zaara traveled to India to hand over the ashes of her beloved foster mother Bebe in Kiritpur (located near Anandpur around 25 kilometers north of Rupar on the Satluj River on the NH21), the sacred place of the Sikhs in Punjab, to the water of their ancestors.
After an initial disagreement, Veer decides to help Zaara and accompany her there. In return, Zaara offers to grant him a wish and Veer asks her for a day of her life. He would like to spend the Lodifest with her, introduce her to his family and show her the village. During the day together with his foster parents, Zaara wins the affection of the two and Veer's love. She changed the village by laying the foundation stone for the suggestion she made, a girls' school.
When Veer accompanies her to the train station the next day and wants to reveal his feelings to her, they both meet Zaara's fiancé Razaa. During a brief moment of being alone, Veer confesses his love to Zaara and it is a sad farewell. Back in Pakistan, Zaara cannot forget Veer. She sees him everywhere and admits that she loves him too.
Shortly before the engagement ceremony, Zaara's friend Shaboo calls Veer to come to Pakistan and take Zaara to India. However, since Veer is an Indian military man, he must first quit his service in order to be allowed to enter Pakistan. When Zaara sees him in the mosque, she walks up to him and the two hug each other. On the same evening Veer is visited by Zaara's mother, who asks him to let Zaara marry Razaa in accordance with her father's wish in order to save her husband's life. He suffered a heart attack after the incident in the mosque and is in shock. Veer agrees and assures that after an interview, Zaara will comply with her parents' wishes.
Veer and Zaara meet the next day and discuss how they will handle their future and how they will deal with their love. After a final hug, the two separate.
The day after, when Veer wants to get on the bus that is supposed to take him back to India, he is arrested by the police. When a fake passport is found on his personal belongings in addition to his own, he is accused of espionage. It quickly turns out that behind the intrigue is Zaara's fiancé, who cannot bear the humiliation that Zaara loves another man and demands retribution.
Razaa lets Veer decide on Zaara's fate - which will mean heaven or hell. If Veer Pratap Singh spends the rest of his life behind bars in silence as a spy, it means paradise on earth for Zaara. If he were to associate Zaara with his stay in Pakistan in order to get rid of the allegation of espionage and to be able to return to India, Zaara's life would be like a hell. Veer and Zaara simultaneously agree: Zaara to the wedding with Razaa and Veer to life imprisonment (by signing a document in which Veer admits that his name is Rajesh Rathore and that he is a spy).
The bus that was supposed to bring Veer to India had an accident on the way with no survivors. For his parents in India, Veer, who was on the passenger list, is dead. Veer Pratap Singh never existed in Pakistan.
22 years later, lawyer Saamiya Siddiqui, on behalf of a human rights commission, enters the cell of Indian prisoner No. 786 in Lahore and informs him that some of the prisoner’s cases are being renegotiated and that his case is one of them. She also tells him that she has worked very hard and that it is now her first case and that, given the current situation, it is almost certain that she will fail and that the way into the male domain of law will remain closed to all women forever becomes. This would destroy the life's work of her late father, who campaigned for equality for women, forever. So she asks him for his help. At first Veer remains silent towards her too, but when Saamiya addresses him by his full name - Veer Pratap Singh - he breaks his silence for the first time in 22 years and tells her his story.
Saamiya is touched and realizes the mistakes made back then, as well as her chance for Veer to fight for justice. She promises not to put flowers on her father's grave until Veer Pratap Singh has regained his name, identity and freedom. During the trial, Saamiya meets her old teacher and, in this case, the prosecuting attorney Zakir Ahmed, a very experienced lawyer who is always undefeated in court. Once their ways parted because of the incompatibility of their different understandings of truth, law, and justice.
After the first day of the trial, the situation is clear to the court from the signed confession. Veer strictly refuses to summon Zaara. He is unable to trample Zaara's honor, which he has guarded for 22 years through his silence, and then return to India. Saamiya's only option is to travel to India to obtain the necessary evidence of Veer's true identity.
At first it seems hopeless, since Veer's parents have since passed away. In his parents' house, however, Saamiya meets Zaara and Shaboo. She tells them about Veer's fate and learns how Zaara's life was during that time. Zaara, supported by her father, had the wedding with Razaa canceled when she learned of Veer's death. She went to India to Veer's parents' house and helped his foster parents to realize Veer's dream, which was also his father's dream. Although the two have passed away, the Pakistani woman has decided to spend the rest of her life in India.
Saamiya and Zaara travel to Pakistan and Zaara submits the necessary documents for Veer's discharge to the court. The court releases squadron leader Veer Pratap Singh with all honors and asks for forgiveness on behalf of the State of Pakistan for the 22 years lost. Veer's lines about his time in Pakistan underline the similarities between his home country and the country where he spent 22 years of his life.
Zakir Ahmed resigns as prosecutor. He realizes that the future of these two divided countries lies in the hands of young, unencumbered people, for whom truth and justice are paramount, and who do not always incorporate the wars of 1947–1965 and 1999 into every preface.
Saamiya completed her father's life's work. She accompanies Veer and Zaara to the border (Wagah Border near Atari) and the two return to India. Veer and Zaara, whose names could never be mentioned together, are now forever united.

background
- After a break from directing for several years, Yash Chopra shot a love story which, in its elements of the separation from Veer and Zaara, also tells the separation from India and Pakistan. Colorful images and a soundtrack from unpublished works by Madan Mohan , who died in 1975, made the film a blockbuster in India and overseas.
- Director and producer Yash Chopra is one of the best known and most successful in his country. His fame extends beyond the borders of India. At over 70, Chopra wrote Indian film history for several decades. He passed his knowledge on to his son Aditya, who is also already successful. He also wrote the script and dialogues for “Veer & Zaara” - both excellent.
- The most famous and successful actors in the country, Amitabh Bachchan , Shah Rukh Khan , Rani Mukherji and Preity Zinta worked together for the film.
- With “Veer & Zaara”, the entire crew has created a film that deals with three problem points without addressing them directly: the relationship between India and Pakistan, the role of women in society and the question of a relationship between two people of different religions.
- The film was supposed to get the title Yeh Kahaan Aa Gaye Hum from the film Silsila 1981. But Yash Chopra found the title Veer and Zaara better suited to the mood of the film.
- Aishwarya Rai was initially planned for the role of Saamiya Siddiqui .
- Karan Johar designed all of Shahrukh Khan's costumes .
