Hema Malini ( Hindi हेमा मालिनी Hemā Mālinī ; born October 16, 1948 in the village of Ammankudi, Tamil Nadu ) is an Indian film actress . She was the second female film star from South India in Hindi film after Vyjayantimala .

Life

Malini was trained in Bharatanatyam , a classical dance form in South India. A first small film appearance was Hema Malini in a Telugu film 1961. In Bollywood began her career in 1968 and 1970, she was charged with Johny Mera Naam by Vijay Anand for Topstar. With her popularity she helped actors in a career break , such as Rajesh Khanna and Dev Anand , to regain commercial success through joint film appearances. In 1972 she received the Filmfare Award for best leading actress for her leading role in Ramesh Sippy's Seeta Aur Geeta . Her most successful films include Sholay (1975) with Dharmendra , who later became her husband, and Amitabh Bachchan . Towards the end of the 1970s she had more demanding roles in some of the films by director Sampooran Singh Gulzar , such as Meera (1979) alongside Shammi Kapoor and Vinod Khanna . In 2004 she played in Veer and Zaara - The Legend of a Love . She was also active as a producer of several films. She directed the television series Noopur as well as the films Dil Ashma Hai and Mohini .

Hema Malini starred in more than 100 films. She was awarded the Padma Shri in 2000 and received the Filmfare Award / Lifetime Achievement in 2000 . She has two daughters, one of whom is Esha Deol . Her stepsons Sunny and Bobby Deol are also actors. She was a nominated member of the Rajya Sabha from 2003 to 2009 and an elected member from 2011 to 2012 . She has been a member of the Lok Sabha for the BJP since the 2014 parliamentary election .
