As a young man, Saketh Ram worked with his friend, the archaeologist Amjad Ali Khan, and his boss Mortimer Wheeler in Mohenjodaro . His wife Aparna from Kolkata lives amid the turmoil and chaos of India's impending independence. Saketh and his wife visit Kolkata despite rioting. Saketh goes out to eat and soon sees a Hindu woman who is being persecuted by Muslim rioters. He saves her, but soon the rioters come to his house, rape and kill his wife. Saketh is devastated. He kills the men who raped and killed his wife.

He meets Sriram Abhiyankar who leads a group of Hindu extremists. He remarries, but his great love remains Aparna. With his new wife Mythili his life begins to normalize again. On a trip he meets Sriram Abhiyankar again and becomes part of an extremist group. He and other Hindus are angry with Gandhi because he wants a peaceful solution and they lack patience. Abhiyankar has an accident and demands that Ram continue Abhiyankar's work of killing Gandhi.

Saketh believes Mahatma Gandhi is to blame for the partition of India . Hindu fundamentalists, including Ram, plan to kill Gandhi. However, after several incidents that led to Amjad's death, Saketh changes his mind about Gandhi. He decides against Gandhi's murder. Mahatma Gandhi is later killed by another assassin.
