Karan Johar ( Hindi : करण जौहर, born May 25, 1972 in Bombay , Maharashtra ) is a director and producer from India . He is the son of Yash Johar and after his death he will manage the production company Dharma Productions , under which he has already shot and produced several successful films.

Karan Johar started as assistant director and supporting actor in Aditya Chopra's successful film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge and was also responsible for the costumes for Shah Rukh Khan . During the shoot, he became friends with Khan. He had known Kajol , the female lead in the film, since he was 18 years old.

His first film, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai , which he directed and wrote the screenplay, was the biggest blockbuster in 1998 and won Filmfare Awards in all major categories. Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol from Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge had accompanied him on his first project and played the leading roles. His second film, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham , made it into the top 3 of the UK hit list. His third film, Kal Ho Naa Ho, was released in 2003 . This time he wasn't directing, but Nikhil Advani, who was his assistant director in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai . Kal Ho Naa Ho was a first for Bollywood cinema because it is set entirely in New York. Shah Rukh Khan as well as Kajol and Rani Mukerji star in all three films , although the last two only made second appearances in Kal Ho Naa Ho .

The fourth film Karan Johar made was Kaal - The Secret of the Jungle , directed by Soham Shah . Shah was already an assistant director on Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham . Shah Rukh Khan only had a brief guest appearance at the beginning of the film.

Johar's next film is called Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna , also with Shah Rukh Khan in the lead role and with many actors from his previous films, such as Rani Mukerji , Preity Zinta and Amitabh Bachchan .

His film My Name Is Khan is the first global Bollywood blockbuster and is one of the most successful Bollywood films of all time abroad. The main roles are played by Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol. The successful trio is working together again for the first time in eight years after Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham.

In 2012, Johar first directed Student of the Year , which features newcomers Sidharth Malhotra , Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan . Bhatt and Dhawan's family have been active in the film industry for a long time.

For the most part, Johar is currently concentrating on the production of films and less on working as a director and screenwriter. In his next planned films he will give the directing instructions again.
