Student of the Year is a 2012 romantic comedy directed by Karan Johar . Alia Bhatt , Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra made their acting debuts with this film. The film was produced under Shah Rukh Khan's company Red Chillies Entertainment and Karan Johars Dharma Production.

Dean Yogindra Vashist was the director of St. Teresa's College for 25 years and is now in the hospital seriously ill. His former students Kaizaad "Sudo" Sodabottleopenerwala, Tanya Israni, Jeet Khurana and Shruti Pathak visit him. They tell about Rohan Nanda, Shanaya and Abhimanyu "Abhi" Singh, who were in their class at the time. A flashback starts. The arrogant popular student Rohan is the son of the wealthy businessman Ashok Nanda. His dream is to become a singer. Rohan and the superficial rich Shanaya Singhania have been a couple for six years and attend the same college together. The rebellious newcomer Abhimanyu "Abhi" Singh, who comes from a middle-class family, has a scholarship and wants to achieve great things. He takes on the spirited Rohan and arguments break out. Every year the student of the year is rewarded with a trophy and will be promoted in the future. Rohan wants to win because he wants to impress his father, who thinks nothing of him. Abhi is an orphan and lives with his grandma and aunt. He wants to win in order to have a good career. The rivalry between the two boys unexpectedly turns into friendship. Rohan introduces his friend Abhi to his father. Abhi tells Rohan's father that he wants to be like him, which impresses Mr. Ashok Nanda. He says Abhi is more his son than his own son, who, in his opinion, has absurd goals. Tanya wants to destroy the relationship between Rohan and Shanaya so that she can only have Rohan to herself. She woos him at every opportunity. Shanaya notices this and confronts Rohan. He just says that she should give him space. Abhi, who observes all of this, comforts the sad Shanaya. He advises her to make Rohan jealous. Shanaya listens to his advice and approaches Abhi in front of Rohan's eyes. Rohan becomes jealous and asks Abhi if he wants something from her. He replies that Shanaya is not his type. But Abhi fell in love with her when she tried to make Rohan jealous. Gradually Abhi has his feelings under control and keeps her distance from Shanaya when she finds out that he loves her. She tries to talk to him, but he just turns her away. Rohan, Abhi and Shanaya are shortlisted for the winner of the trophy. They are divided into two groups and have to solve puzzles using the tips given. Shanaya's and Abhi's team wins by a small margin. Rohan invites himself to Abhi to celebrate his victory. Abhi's grandmother suddenly has a heart attack and has to go to the hospital. Shanaya visits Abhi and his grandmother every day in the hospital with flowers. That brings the two closer. Abhi's grandmother dies and Abhi then avoids any contact, including with Shanaya. Shanaya wants to cheer him up and visits him in his room. There is a kiss that Rohan sees. Rohan is furious and wants to win the trophy now. Shanaya feels hurt because she seems like a price and you don't care about her feelings. Confused, she goes to her friend Shruti, who advises her to give up after Shanaya has told her that she doesn't know who to go to the ball with. There is a dispute between the two, because Shruti wants to increase their chances of winning the trophy. The next exam is imminent. The remaining candidates have to show how well they can dance at a ball. Shanaya goes to the ball with Jeet, Rohan with Tanya and Abhi with Shruti. Rohan notices that Shanaya loves Abhi but cannot reveal her feelings because there is tension between them. The last exam is imminent. The finalists have to show how athletic they are in a triathlon. Rohan wins in the final, Abhi just behind him. Dean hands Rohan the trophy at the ceremony, but he refuses. The drunk Sudo tells how stupid such a competition is, it only destroys friendships.
10 years later it can be seen that Shanaya and Abhi are happily married and Abhi is an important businessman. Rohan has fulfilled his dream as a rock star and is on a successful tour. Abhi confronts Rohan and wants to know why he rejected the trophy, because that's how Abhi, who crossed the finish line second, won. Rohan knew that Abhi lost on purpose, but he couldn't explain why. The two fight until Abhi reveals the reason. Back then, just before the finish line, Abhi saw that Rohan's father was happy when Abhi was in the lead. Abhi wanted to be like Mr. Ashok Nanda, but he didn't want to be a bad father. So he lost on purpose. At the end the two repeat the last sprint amicably.

“[…] The story is hardly worth mentioning: A student story so dripping with clichés and predictable situations with a rather useless framework and some questionable character decisions. Even the staging doesn’t manage anything massive, we get a solid imagery, too slack montage that makes the whole thing much too long, naturalistic features and pleasing songs that do not linger long in the ear canal, but at least wake up the sleepy bones from time to time.
No, what should be the most exciting thing here is the cast and how it is used. The three key characters are all newcomers - Siddharth Malhotra, Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt. The latter is the daughter of producer Mahesh Bhatt, Dhawan the offspring of comedy director David Dhawan. Both do not do so badly, Bhatt seems a little colorless for the supposedly prettiest girl in school, while Dhawan has the most interesting character development, after all, he plays a show-off and top dog, but his father treats him like a good-for-nothing at home. That reveals a few facets in his figure that others cannot show. [...] "
