Naushad Ali (often just Naushad ; Hindi नौशाद अली Nauśād Alī ; * December 25, 1919 in Lucknow ; † May 5, 2006 in Mumbai , Maharashtra ) was one of the leading film music composers of Indian Bollywood cinema.

Naushad came to Mumbai from Lucknow to work as a musician in the late 1930s. His rise to become a successful music composer began in the 1940s.

Naushad brought playback singers Lata Mangeshkar and Mohammed Rafi into the film music business. His professional training in Hindustan music enabled him to incorporate adaptations of Hindustan ragas into his compositions. His greatest hits include the music of Mughal-e-Azam , Mother India and Baiju Bawra , for which he received a Filmfare Award .

Naushad received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1981 for his outstanding contribution to Indian film .
