Nadira
Nadira ( Hindi : नादिरा , Nādirā ; actually Farhat Ezekiel Nadira ; born December 5, 1932 in Baghdad , Iraq ; † February 9, 2006 in Mumbai , Maharashtra ) was an Indian film actress with successes particularly in the 1950s and 1960s.
Life
She made her film debut in 1950 alongside Dilip Kumar in Mehboob Khan's Aan . Her role as Maya in Raj Kapoor's Shri 420 is considered to be her best acting performance. Because of her European appearance, she was often cast in the role of a wicked seductress and vamp.
Nadira starred in films such as Dil Apna Aur Preet Parayee , Hanste Zakhm , Amar Akbar Anthony and Pakeezah . She starred in The Guru and Bombay Talkie , directed by James Ivory . Nadira won a Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1975 for her role as Julie's mother in Julie . She was active as an actress until the 1990s, her last role in Josh in 2000 .
Nadira died in Mumbai after a long and serious illness. She belonged to the Iraqi Jewish community of India. Her entire family had left India. She has a brother in Israel and one in the United States.
