The Prince of Piplinagar (original Shree 420 ; Hindi : श्री 420 , Urdu : 420 شری translated: Mr. 420 ) is a socially critical Hindi - comedy film from 1955 directed by and starring Raj Kapoor .

Raju sets off for Bombay in search of work. He is quite confident, since he at least has a university degree. But on the very first day he got to know the ruthless city life. He is robbed and sleeps in the open air. Eventually he meets Vidya, who comes from a poor background and teaches poor children. They fall in love and want to get married.
Fortunately, he finds a job in an ironing shop. One day he has to deliver the ironed clothes to the wealthy Maya who discovers his talent for playing cards. She opens the door for him to the world of the rich and through Raju reaches even more wealth. When Raju asks Maya to give him some of the money he has earned, she throws him out.
Now the sleazy millionaire Seth Sonachand Dharmanand wants to profit from Raju and makes him rich with questionable methods. In his fraudulent activities, Raju pretends to be the prince (Hindi: Rajkumar ) of the fantasy site "Piplinagar". All the wealth around Raju makes Vidya sad and she considers him a 420 (criminal article for cheaters). She wants to get him out of this mendacious and corrupt world of the rich.
Ultimately, Raju gives up his greed and deceit as he has learned from his mistakes. Raju is now becoming an honest man.

The patriotic song Mera Joota Hai Japani ( My shoes are from Japan ) - which is about the fact that the clothes are from Japan, England and Russia, but the heart is Hindustan - is still a very popular song today. The words Ramayya Vasthaavayya are Telugu , but the rest of the songs are sung in Hindi .
The songs come from the composer duo Shankar-Jaikishan . The lyrics were written by Shailendra and Hasrat Jaipuri .

Section 420 of the Indian Penal Code , to which the film title refers, concerns a criminal offense against fraud. With "Shree 420" are meant the honorable gentlemen who have become rich through fraudulent actions. With meaningful name the two female leads were provided: Vidya means "wisdom" and Maya "illusion".
The German dubbed version is only 112 minutes long, as all dance and singing scenes have been cut out.
With this film, Raj Kapoor developed the vagrant role that he played in Awaara (1951) and was based on his idol Charlie Chaplin in terms of clothing and behavior . A year later, in Jagte Raho , he appeared again in this role.
