Aequidens viridis is a cichlid from the Pantanal Biosphere Reserve in central Brazil .

features

Aequidens viridis is a high-backed, stocky fish with a noticeably rounded head profile. Its eponymous basic color in the head and back area is green (= viridis ). The eyes are red. In the few photos that exist of this species, the basic color is more yellowish with shiny green-gold scales. There is a dark spot on the flank, a smaller one at the base of the tail. Depending on the mood, one longitudinal and up to eight gray transverse bands are pronounced on the basic color. The chest and abdomen are colored pink, especially during the breeding season. Gender differences are not very pronounced. In the literature, a maximum standard length of 16.5 centimeters is mentioned.

Occurrence

Aequidens viridis is a largely unexplored Cichlidae in ichthyology , of which only the type material and a few other evidence are known. The type locality of the cichlid, discovered by Johann Natterer for science in 1829 and first described by Heckel in 1840 as Acara viridis, lies in the drainage of the Rio Guaporé , near the ruined city of Vila Bela da Santissima Trinidade in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso . There are also the sites of the species Aequidens awani and Aequidens guaporensis described by Hasemann in 1911 , which are synonymous descriptions of Aequidens viridis .

In 2006 Aequidens viridis was caught by aquarium enthusiasts from Switzerland and Germany in the drainage of the Rio Guaporé and imported alive to Europe. Wolfgang Staeck, a teacher from Berlin who specializes in cichlids, names the ecological data he has determined : air temperature between 20 and 30 ° C, water temperature 24.3 to 26.4 ° C, pH value 6.5 to 6.6, total and carbonate hardness below 1 ° dH, electrical conductivity 20 µS / cm.
