Computer-aided innovation ( CAI ) refers to a software category of information systems that have been specifically created for the typical management tasks and activities in the innovation process. CAI software systems support u. a. Activities such as invention methods (e.g. TRIZ ), idea generation and management or project selection and management methods (e.g. stage-gate model ). In the German-speaking area, one also speaks of innovation software .

A distinction must be made between innovation software and generic project management software, standard communication systems and office information systems, CAD / CAE ( computer-aided design / computer-aided engineering ) and other, primarily technical or operationally-oriented development applications.

While the terms CAI and innovation software are often used interchangeably, provides innovation management software a subcategory of CAI. This subcategory includes particular CAI products that support management tasks in the innovation process.

Potential benefits of innovation software

Innovation software has the potential to improve and accelerate this decision-making process. Different scenarios, evaluation criteria or alternatives can be considered simultaneously, which improves the quality of the decisions and the wealth of information. Innovation software is also often suitable for making decision-making processes more effective and easier to understand.

Increase in competence

The use of innovation software can promote the transparency of processes. This makes the innovation process more understandable and easier to accept. Knowledge of the innovation and management methodologies can be conveyed to the users. The use of CAI products enables less competent users to use complex methods with little effort.

Increase in creativity

Especially at the beginning, the innovation process depends on a large pool of ideas - only in later phases is the quality of the ideas more important. The barrier-free input of ideas and the involvement of external people and institutions such as experts, customer suggestions, etc. also encourage creativity.
