Johann Jakob Heckel

Johann Jakob Heckel , in publications also Jacob Heckel (born January 23, 1790 in Mannheim , † March 1, 1857 in Vienna ), was an Austrian zoologist and ichthyologist .

After studying agriculture, he devoted himself to the natural sciences with a focus on botany and ornithology . He is considered an excellent draftsman and taxidermist. Heckel later specialized in fish science. He worked closely with the great ichthyologists of his time such as Georges Cuvier , Achille Valenciennes and Charles Lucien Jules Laurent Bonaparte .

Heckel's work on the cichlid collection of his colleague Johann Natterer , which he collected on his trips to Brazil , is well known.

Heckel died at the age of 67 from a bacterial infection that he probably contracted while rescuing a whale skeleton.
