Rosina Lawrence (born December 30, 1912 in Ottawa , Canada , † June 23, 1997 in New York City , New York ) was a Canadian - American actress , singer and dancer . She starred in 30 films between 1924 and 1939, mostly in the comedies of Hal Roach .

Life

Lawrence's entry into the film industry was made easier by her father, who worked as a set designer for films. She made her first film at the age of 13, but initially only appeared occasionally in films. She has appeared as a singer, actress and dancer in various clubs, musicals and plays. She signed on to 20th Century Fox at the age of 20 . In the following years she mainly starred in the comedies of Hal Roach . So the good-looking blonde appeared as a teacher Miss Lawrence in several short films of the little rascals . In 1937 she played a young woman in the comedy Pick a Star who is on her way to becoming a star in Hollywood.

She has also starred alongside Laurel and Hardy in three films, including Two Rode to Texas as the poor kitchen maid Mary Roberts, who inherited a gold mine from her late father. In addition to her film career, Lawrence continued to work as a dancer and singer, so she dubbed Stan Laurel's soprano voice in The Trail of the Lonesome Pie in Zwei ritten nach Texas . She had her last role in 1939 in the Italian comedy In campagna è caduta una stella , where she plays an American film star who causes great excitement when she is stranded in a small Italian town.

In 1939 she married Juvenal P. Marchisio and then retired from the acting business. From then on she worked as a housewife. After her husband died in 1973, she became an honorary member of the Laurel and Hardy fan club Sons of the Desert in 1980 . In 1987, at the age of 74, she married John McCabe (1920–2005), an important member of the fan club and author of a book about the comedian duo. The marriage lasted until Lawrence's death ten years later from cancer. After her death, Rosina Lawrence's remains were cremated.
