John Francis Cardinal O'Hara CSC (born May 1, 1888 in Ann Arbor , USA , † August 20, 1960 in Philadelphia , USA) was Archbishop of Philadelphia .

Life

John Francis O'Hara studied at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana and in Washington, DC and Pennsylvania , the subjects philosophy and Catholic theology . In 1912 he joined the Congregation of Holy Cross and received on 9 September 1916, the sacrament of Holy Orders . From 1917 to 1939 he taught at the University of Notre Dame and initially held the office of spiritual , then later that of vice- rector and rector .

On December 11, 1939, Pope Pius XII appointed him . as titular bishop of Mylasa and auxiliary bishop in the military ordinariate of the USA . He received his episcopal ordination on January 15 of the following year by Francis Cardinal Spellman . Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Fort Wayne , John Francis Noll , and the Bishop of Indianapolis , Joseph Elmer Ritter .

On March 10, 1945 Pope Pius XII appointed him. to the Bishop of Buffalo . The inauguration took place on May 8th of the same year. On November 23, 1951, he was appointed Archbishop of Philadelphia . Pope John XXIII took John Francis O'Hara on December 15, 1958 as a cardinal priest with the titular Church Santi Andrea e Gregorio al Monte Celio in the college of cardinals . Cardinal O'Hara passed away two years later. He was buried in the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Notre Dame.
