Denis (also: Dennis) Joseph Cardinal Dougherty (born August 16, 1865 in Ashland , Pennsylvania , USA , † May 31, 1951 in Philadelphia ) was Archbishop of Philadelphia .

Life

Dougherty studied Catholic theology and philosophy in Montréal , Overbrook and Rome . He completed his studies with a doctorate to the doctor of theology from and received on 31 May 1890, the sacrament of Holy Orders . He then became the official of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and taught English , Latin , history and Catholic religion at the Overbrook Seminary .

On June 12, 1903, he was appointed bishop of Nueva Segovia in the Philippines . He received his episcopal ordination two days later from Cardinal Francesco Satolli ; Co- consecrators were Curia Archbishop Pietro Gasparri and the retired Bishop of Guastalla , Archbishop Enrico Grazioli .

Pope Pius X appointed Dougherty Bishop of Jaro in the Philippines on June 21, 1908 . Pope Benedict XV called him back to his American homeland and named him Bishop of Buffalo on December 9, 1915 . On May 1, 1918, Dougherty was named Archbishop of Philadelphia and installed in office on July 10 of the same year.

On March 7, 1921 Dougherty was under the consistory of Pope Benedict XV. as Cardinal Priest with the title Church Santi Nereo ed Achilleo in the Cardinal College added. Denis Joseph Cardinal Dougherty attended the 1939 conclave .

He died on May 31, 1951 in Philadelphia and was buried in the local cathedral . His nephew was the Bishop of Scranton , Joseph Carroll McCormick .
