The co- cathedral of Castelo Branco , consecrated to Archangel Michael ( Portuguese Sé Catedral de Castelo Branco or Igreja de São Miguel ) in the eastern Portuguese city of Castelo Branco is - next to the Cathedral of Portalegre - the second bishopric of the Roman Catholic diocese Portalegre-Castelo Branco .

location

The easted cathedral is located in the old town center of the approx. 410  m high town of Castelo Branco near the border with Spain . The episcopal city of Portalegre is about 50 km (as the crow flies) south.

history

The diocese of Castelo Branco was born in 1771 on the orders of Pope Clement XIV. ; However, it lost its status with the re-establishment of the Diocese of Portalegre in 1881. It was not until 1956 that it was renamed the Diocese of Portalegre-Castelo Branco. The construction of the church and later cathedral was mostly in the 17th century; it was built on the site of a previous Romanesque building .

architecture

The architecture of the facade, which is divided into a central section with a triangular gable and two side towers, corresponds to a strict Renaissance style. Only the bell storey of the south tower, elevated with bullets, is original; the other was not added until around the middle of the 20th century. Three portals lead into the church, which has only one nave but has side altars . Instead of a transept there are two chapel extensions . The flat-closing apse (capela-mor) , separated by an imposing triumphal arch, is significantly smaller than the nave (nave) .

Furnishing

The baroque main altar and the baroque side altars are also noteworthy; In addition, the two sermon pulpits set into the outer walls are of interest.
