Almaceda is a municipality ( freguesia ) in the Portuguese district ( concelho ) of Castelo Branco . It has 677 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).

history

Finds suggest human settlement since the Bronze Age . Traces can also be found from the time of the Lusitans and the Roman occupation. a. Notes on existing fortifications here. At the time of the occupation by the Arabs known as Almazeida (about high water ), they dug irrigation canals here and extracted ores. In the deed of donation of the area to the Knights Templar in 1182, Almaceda was mentioned for the first time in the independent kingdom of Portugal , only to join the circle of Sarzedas that was created shortly afterwards . With the dissolution of the district, the place came to the district of São Vicente da Beira in 1848 . Since it was closed in 1895, Almaceda has belonged to the Castelo Branco district.

Culture, sports and sights

The parish church ( Igreja Paroquial de Almaceda ) from the 16th century is dedicated to St. Sebastian as Igreja de São Sebastião . It is a listed building, along with three other buildings in the community.

The place Martim Branco is considered a particularly well-preserved, traditional village, and was included in the route of the slate villages, the Aldeias do Xisto , due to its slate architecture .
