Otelo Saraiva de Carvalho - strategist of the bloodless Carnation Revolution in Portugal

Otelo Nuno Romão Saraiva de Carvalho [ ɔˈtɛlu sɐˈɾajvɐ dəkɐɾˈvaʎu ] (born August 31, 1936 , Lourenço Marques , now Maputo , in Mozambique ) is a Portuguese officer who is an important strategist of the April 25, 1974 Carnation Revolution .

Otelo Saraiva de Carvalho had spent many years in the colonial war in Africa from 1961 and was one of the conspirators of the MFA Movement that carried out a coup on April 25, 1974, with Otelo being credited with the role of the main organizer of the coup. His achievement in the bloodless liberation of the country from the dictatorship was also recognized by politically dissenters. In the following months he commanded the troops of the "Comando Operacional do Continente" (COPCON), which were supposed to secure order in the country and promote the revolutionary process.

In the course of 1975 the struggles for power and direction intensified in the MFA armed forces movement . In this development, Otelo and COPCON represented the leftmost wing, which was eliminated on November 25, 1975 in a military operation under António Ramalho Eanes . In 1976 Otelo ran for president against Eanes and lost.

Otelo was later charged with contact or membership of the Forças Populares 25 de Abril (FP-25), which carried out attacks in Portugal in the following years . His role in this remained controversial in public and before the courts, and his friends suspected an act of political revenge. After imprisonment, he was ultimately given amnesty and a retrial was put down because of what appeared to be evidence that remained in dispute. Since then he has been working as a small business owner.

Quotes

In 2011, when Portugal asked the world for international financial aid, Otelo Saraiva de Carvalho declared that he would not have made the 1974 revolution if he had known how the country would look now. He also said that every day people on the street ask him to declare "another April 25th, another military coup".
