State Council (Portugal)

The State Council of Portugal ( Portuguese Conselho do Estado ) is a body that advises the President and consists of the President, the Prime Minister , the President of the Constitutional Court , the Ombudsman , the regional Presidents of Madeira and the Azores , as well as five from the President and five from the Parliament is composed of selected persons (councilors), usually former presidents. The President is in the chair.

The Conselho do Estado was established in 1845. Actually, it was created so that the President only convenes when Portugal is at war, or when he wants to dissolve parliament or the government . But the President of the State can also convene the State Council if he wishes to know the non-partisan opinion of the Council on important issues affecting the country.

Today the committee consists of 21 people. Its seat is on Rua Prof. Gomes Teixeira in the Freguesia Santo Condestável in Lisbon .
