Paul Duden

Paul Duden (born October 30, 1868 in Soest , † February 7, 1954 in Oberstdorf ) was a German chemist and industrialist.

life and work

Duden was a son of the linguist Konrad Duden and Adeline Duden. His son was the lawyer Herdin Hans Duden , his granddaughter is the historian Barbara Duden .

He studied in Halle and Marburg, at Carl Gräbe in Geneva and Emil Fischer in Wurzburg, doctorate at Ludwig Knorr at the University of Jena with a dissertation on contributions to the theory of pyrazole Dr. phil., became a private lecturer and associate professor there. With work on pyrazoles , hydrazine , aliphatic dinitro compounds , aminocamphores , camphenamine, bornylenediamine and dicamphenpyrazine, he was one of the most prominent representatives of organic chemistry of his time.

In 1905 he joined the Hoechst paintworks as head of the azo color company . He later took over the management of the central laboratory and developed important new processes in acetylene chemistry, including the catalytic oxidation of acetylene to acetaldehyde , acetic acid and acetone .

After founding IG Farbenindustrie , he became a member of the board and head of the Mittelrhein operating group in 1925. In 1932 he retired into private life. His successor as plant manager was Ludwig Hermann . (Duden's son Herdin Hans, who passionately sympathized with the German war of aggression and was a Hitler Youth functionary, was supposed to work as an authorized signatory at IG Farben-AG in Ludwigshafen while he was still studying law.)

Duden held management positions in numerous organizations and associations in the chemical industry, including as chairman of the chemical trade association and chairman of the Association of German Chemists . From 1938 to 1952 he was chairman of the Marburg University Association .

In 1933 he became Vice President of the German Chemical Society as part of the " Aryanization " of the board of directors and succeeded his Jewish predecessor Arthur Rosenheim . Technology historian Helmut Maier sees it as "[...] not only the most important protagonist of the policy of harmonization in the chemical associations in this phase".

From 1888 he was a member of the Corps Teutonia Marburg .

The DECHEMA made him an honorary member of the University of Marburg Honorary Senator, the University of Frankfurt awarded him the 1930 h Doctor of Science. c. A street in Kriftel is named after Paul Duden .
