The two locomotives of the class ВЛ84 (German transcription WL84) of the Soviet Railways (SŽD) were prototypes of a wide-gauge electric locomotive for freight train service on routes that are electrified with 25 kV alternating current . The series was never mass- produced.

history

For use on the Baikal-Amur highway , an improved successor series was developed on the basis of the 1976 prototype ВЛ81-001 (WL81-001), in which fully spring-loaded motors were used instead of central bearing motors . In 1979 two prototypes with a modern locomotive body and a larger driver's cab were built and classified as ВЛ84-001 and -002. Compared to the series ВЛ80Т (WL80T) and ВЛ80Р (WL80R) series locomotives, which were built in series at the time , the performance could be increased significantly, a 4400-ton train could be transported on a gradient of 9 ‰ at 55 km / h.

The motor suspension in the bogie, which was already unsatisfactory on the ВЛ81-001, caused new problems that could not be solved. Therefore the series ВЛ84 was not procured in series. The ВЛ84-001 was dismantled, the ВЛ84-002 received regular bogies. But it was also withdrawn from the mission and is now in the Railway Museum in Rostov-on-Don .

The construction of the locomotive body, which was introduced with the ВЛ84 series, was later used in the ВЛ11М (WL11M), ВЛ15 (WL15), ВЛ85 (WL85) and Э13 (E13) series.
