Daniela Mercury (born  July 28, 1965 in Salvador da Bahía ; actually Daniela Mercuri de Almeida Póvoas ) is a Brazilian singer. In terms of style, it is counted among the Música Popular Brasileira and Axé music.

Life

Daniela Mercury was born to Liliana Mercuri de Almeida and Antônio Fernando Abreu Ferreira de Almeida. She grew up with her four siblings in Salvador da Bahía. She had dance lessons since she was eight. As a young woman, she and her sister Vânia began performing as singers in Salvador. Since then, songs by Chico Buarque and Elis Regina have been part of her repertoire .

In 1984, at the age of 19, she married Zalther Portela Laborda Póvoas, childhood friend and electronics engineer. In 1985 and 1986, the marriage gave birth to the children Gabriel, now a singer-songwriter , and Giovanna, now a dancer in Mercury's ensemble. In 1996 the divorce took place.

She became the lead singer of the band Companhia Clic , with whom she released two albums. Then Daniela Mercury started her solo career, which eventually brought her international fame. After the release of her first album Daniela Mercury , she performed with various musicians for some time. In 1989 she became a background singer in Gilberto Gil's band . In 1991 her album O Canto da Cidade was released , which sold more than 2 million times in Brazil. After appearing at several large live concerts in Brazil, Daniela Mercury also became known outside of Brazil, especially in the USA and Japan . In total, Daniela Mercury sold around 11 million albums all over the world and is therefore the number 1 singer in Brazil.

She is an ambassador for the United Nations Anti-AIDS Program and UNICEF . Due to an advertisement for the use of condoms as part of her commitment, the Vatican struck her off the list of artists who, in the presence of Pope Benedict XVI , at the beginning of December 2005 . to give a Christmas concert in Rome .

On October 12, 2013, she married the journalist Malu Verçosa in a civil ceremony in Salvador da Bahia. Both brides appeared all in white. Daniela Mercury's father, who was originally critical of the connection, also attended the wedding. In April of that year Daniela Mercury spoke about Malu Verçosa as "my wife, my family, my inspiration to sing."

On the occasion of the 2016 Summer Olympics , she recorded the official ARD Olympic song Games of Passion for the German market . The song was created in collaboration with the German composer Wolf Kerschek and the NDR Bigband .
