Margareth Menezes (born October 13, 1962 in Salvador da Bahía ) is a Brazilian singer of the Música Popular Brasileira . It is close to Sambareggae and Axé music.

biography

Menezes was born in a poor part of Salvador da Bahia. She experienced her first musical influences through religious singing in her parish. There she also began to sing very early (therefore in Brazil she is also known as the Aretha Franklin of Brazil ). Since her mother was very fond of music, she got to know the rich musical tradition of her Brazilian home state Bahia as a child . Menezes sang in every possible situation privately, played guitar and wrote his first own songs as a teenager. During this time she appeared for the first time as a singer and also as an actress in various theaters in her hometown during the Carnival in Salvador.

After various appearances in night clubs as a singer, Menezes won the Troféu Caymmi for "Best Female Performer of Bahia" at the age of 21 . After that she toured all over Bahia with an eleven-member band. In 1988 she recorded her first solo album. It had the title: Margareth Menezes . Her second album Elegibô was number one in the American world music charts for eleven weeks. The album was also recognized by US Billboard Magazine for 10,000 copies sold in the US .

In 1989/90 the British musician David Byrne invited Margareth Menezes to participate in his tour through the USA and Europe. This promoted Menezes' international career considerably, especially since the until then largely unknown, despite her awards, stole the show from the undercooled Byrne through her temperament. This was followed by his first successful solo tours through the USA, Canada, France, Italy, Germany and Belgium. In 1995 Menezes played at the Montreux Jazz Festival and the Heimatklänge Festival in Berlin with great success. In 2002 she appeared in the documentary Moro no Brasil by the Finnish film director Mika Kaurismäki . In the same year she was also a guest on the Tribalistas project by Marisa Monte , Carlinhos Brown and Arnaldo Antunes . In 2003 she landed a big carnival hit in Brazil with Dandalunda .
