Pierre Kast

Pierre Kast (born December 22, 1920 in Paris , France ; † October 20, 1984 on a flight from Rome to Paris) was a French film director and screenwriter , "an outsider of the Nouvelle Vague generation."

Life

Kast had been involved in the French Resistance during World War II . In 1945 he became one of the founders of the Ciné Club at the Sorbonne in Paris , where he was studying at the time. Kast went to the Cinémathèque française in 1946 , where he continued his education in film theory. In 1948, Cinémathèque President Jean Grémillon , a well-known director, enabled Kast to become an assistant director, and the following year he also helped him direct Kast's first short film, " Les charmes de l'existence ". Grémillon's experimental, avant-garde understanding of film also influenced Kast's short films, which focused on several important artists such as the architects Le Corbusier and Claude-Nicolas Ledoux .

Before he was able to direct his first full-length feature film in 1957, Pierre Kast worked as an assistant to experienced cinema veterans such as René Clément , Preston Sturges and Jean Renoir and also wrote film reviews for the publications "Action" and " Cahiers du cinéma ". His feature film debut “ Alchemy of Love ” “was a hearty parody of the American horror film genre, unusual in idea, conception and execution for the French cinema of the 50s.” With “ You can give it a try”, “Reigen der Liebe ” and “ Holidays in Portugal ”, Pierre Kast took on the subjects of “erotic experiments, errors and confusions”, “in a new 'Nouvelle Vague' style, carried by floating elegance, empathy and irony”. After “ Die Immoralischen ”, a family drama about power, ambition and unscrupulousness, at the same time a rare excursion by Kast to international star cinema, his oeuvre turned more and more often into “personal, intellectual formal games” that hardly interested the audience of the movie theaters, the director but several times led to exotic locations such as Brazil and Easter Island .

Since the mid-1960s, Kast had directed several films for television. He also excelled as a novelist (" Les vampires de l'Alfama", "Le bonheur ou le pouvoir "). Pierre Kast died exactly one day before the famous Nouvelle Vague colleague François Truffaut , a friend and competitor of Kast. At the time of his death, he was on board an airplane that was supposed to take him from Rome to Paris. At that time he was shooting a new film, the television production " L'herbe rouge " , which was broadcast the following year .
