The 50-year-old Mané lives his quiet life in Mindelo (Cape Verde) as a pub owner and youth football coach. In the midst of a football-loving society, he is reminded of his past as a successful goalkeeper every day. The earlier admiration for him steadily declines. He is therefore increasingly mourning his missed opportunity not to have switched to professional sport at Benfica Lisbon . He sees a talent in the young Kalu in the team he has trained who he would like to make a move to Benfica possible. Finally, against the wishes of his wife, he sets off expectantly on the trip to Lisbon. He not only wants to visit his estranged son there, but on the one hand his club Benfica on the occasion of a final game, and on the other hand also sound out the chances for Kalu in the club. He is also keen to find a former sports comrade there who, unlike himself, had decided to move to Benfica. He returns to Mindelo disillusioned with different impressions.

The film was the first in a series of films by the director dealing with Portuguese-speaking Africa . The focus of this film is not so much on the problems on site, but on the characters and their different views and expectations of life, their enthusiasm for football, and their different ways of dealing with missed opportunities and getting older.

The film won various awards, including a. a mention in the panorama section of the Berlinale 1998 and the jury award at the Fantasporto film festival in the same year.
