O Gotejar da Luz (Eng .: The Trickle of Light) is a Mozambican - Portuguese film by the Portuguese director Fernando Vendrell from 2002 .

action

The now 50-year-old Portuguese Rui Pedro returns to Mozambique and visits the stations of his childhood. Despite all the changes over the years, more and more points of contact are opening up, and memories come back. Rui Pedro once had a carefree childhood in the Portuguese colony , as the child of Portuguese farmers in the hinterland of Mozambique. He lived between the European-Portuguese culture and the African-Mozambican culture. The adjacent river Pungwe , which could only be crossed by a small raft ferry, marked the border for him to the mysterious, promising as well as threatening outside world, and to the school, which deprived him of a carefree and at the same time protected and varied life outside of the holidays. At 14, his ideal world collapsed with the onset of the Portuguese colonial war , and the contradictions that he had previously united as a matter of course were now insurmountable, and his life changed fundamentally.

reception

The calm, contemplative film is a film adaptation of the story of the same name by the Mozambican author Leite de Vasconcelos . The theme is, in atmospheric images, the contrast between organic nature and people's ambitions, the contrast between human coexistence and the situation of exploitation between European settlers and the African population, the differences between the two cultures, which are unnaturally distant from each other, and the violence that is done to people in the field of tension by external circumstances and that they allow themselves to be forced.

The film won a number of awards, including a. at the Berlinale 2002 , and the Portuguese Globo de Ouro for the acting performance of Vítor Norte .
