history

Stillnau in 1947

Stillnau is first called Stillenouwe around the year 1150 , which is probably to be interpreted as a short form of Stillenbachouwe or Stillenachouwe , that is, as a (settlement near) a "quiet" (quietly flowing) stream. The place is not an original settlement, but should be viewed as an extension developed from Bissingen.

In terms of manorial rights, the Hohenburg-Bissingen rulership and the county of Oettingen ( Vogtamt Unterbissingen ) were particularly wealthy; The former owned two farms here around 1559, 12 Sölden, a fiefdom and the shepherd's house, the latter around 1573 a farm, 12 Sölden and a riding school. These two manors remained decisive until the end of the old order. From about 1150 to 1384 a lower noble family is mentioned, which named itself after the place, the Lords of Stillenawe (or Stillenowe). The location of their castle and whose service it was originally used is uncertain.

In 1813 the place had 40 residential buildings and in 1961 42 residential buildings.

On May 1, 1978, the previously independent community of Stillnau was incorporated into the Bissingen market.

Main article: St. Alban (Stillnau)

The parish church of St. Alban used to be a pilgrimage church which was heavily visited at times . Its current baroque style building dates back to the years 1669–1672. In the Roman Catholic parish church, the organ and the pulpit are considered artistic treasures.

Originally Stillnau belonged to the parish of Bissingen and was only raised to a separate parish through a school advisor (1828) in 1847. In 1847 Stillnau became its own parish.
