The Gunzburg Station is an important railway junction in Swabia and the only station of the district town Gunzburg . There is also the Wasserburg (Günz) stop on the Mittelschwabenbahn .

The station has six tracks and belongs to category 3 of the DB Station & Service . It is served daily by around 125 Deutsche Bahn AG and Agilis trains. In Günzburg station, the Mittelschwabenbahn branches off the Augsburg – Ulm line , making it a separation station .

The station is located northwest of the city center of Günzburg. To the south of the station is Bahnhofplatz, through which Siemensstrasse runs. In the west, the Auweg crosses under the tracks through an underpass, to the north of the station the Wiesweg runs. The station building is located south of the tracks and has the address Bahnhofplatz 5.

The separation station is on the double-track and electrified main line from Augsburg to Ulm ( VzG route number 5302). This has been developed as the main traffic axis for national and international long- distance passenger and freight traffic for up to 200 km / h.

The Mittelschwabenbahn branching off in Günzburg via Krumbach to Mindelheim (VzG route number 5351) is a single-track and non-electrified branch line that is only used in regional traffic.

There has also been a connection to Leipheim airfield since 1937 , which is currently no longer in operation. The line branches off 500 meters west of the station from the Mittelschwabenbahn track, crosses the B 10 at the western exit of Günzburg and finally runs in a south-westerly direction to the site of the former airfield.

The Günzburg station was opened on September 26, 1853 together with the Neu-Ulm - Burgau section of the Bavarian Maximiliansbahn . On May 1, 1854, the entire Ulm - Munich line finally went into operation. The Mittelschwabenbahn to Krumbach (Swabia) , which began in Günzburg, was opened in 1892, and in 1910 it continued to Mindelheim .

Passenger trains have not stopped at Neuoffingen station since 1988 , so that Günzburg station also became a transfer station between Maximiliansbahn and Danube Valley Railway .

From 2006 to 2009 the station was modernized for 8.3 million euros, on April 27, 2009 the modernized station area was opened by the then Federal Minister of Transport, Tiefensee .

The station has five tracks on three platforms . There is also a stump track on the house platform for trains to Mindelheim. All platforms are covered and have digital train destination displays . The central platforms are connected to the main platform via a pedestrian underpass and are equipped with lifts and guide strips for the disabled .

The station is controlled by a relay interlocking of the type Dr S3 (2) which was put into operation in 1959 . The interlocking, which is subject to a partial conversion ban, is to be replaced by an electronic interlocking . The new building was applied for at the Federal Railway Authority in April 2018 . The monitoring area of ​​the signal box, which is to be operated from the Karlsruhe operations center, extends from Neuoffingen (km 54.7) to Unterfahlheim (km 69.8).
