The Ingolstadt Nord train station is the third passenger train station currently in operation in Ingolstadt , alongside the Ingolstadt main train station and the Ingolstadt Audi stop . In contrast to the main train station, it is located near the city center, but is only served by regional traffic.

The station is listed in the operating point directory under the designation MIN and is classified in station category 3 of the Deutsche Bahn. The station is administered by the Rosenheim station management.

With a gradient of up to 20 per mille, the station is considered the steepest regional train station in Germany (as of 2007).

Traffic importance

In the train station Ingolstadt Nord is new Ingolstadt-Nuremberg from Altstrecke Munich -Ingolstadt- Treuchtlingen ( KBS  unthreaded 990). Already in the station, the tracks of the high-speed line is sloping to the directly adjoining the station Audi Tunnel to run. In addition, a heavily used freight track branches off to the refineries , which are located in the east of the city.

passenger traffic

The North Station is only served by regional trains ( RE , RB , BRB , Agilis ), the ICE and IC trains do not stop. Thus, the operation of the station is designed as follows:

Train type route Clock frequency
RE Munich-Nuremberg Express :
( Munich -) Ingolstadt - Ingolstadt North - Allersberg - Nuremberg

Weekend every two hours: sometimes every hour
RB Munich - Ingolstadt - Ingolstadt North - Eichstätt train station - Treuchtlingen ( every two hours: - Nuremberg) Hourly
agilis Regensburg - Ingolstadt North every hour (Mon-Fri)
RB Ingolstadt - Ingolstadt North - Eichstätt train station - Treuchtlingen - Nuremberg individual trains
RB Munich - Pfaffenhofen - Ingolstadt - Ingolstadt North individual trains
BRB Ingolstadt - Ingolstadt North - Eichstätt train station - Eichstätt city individual trains

Since the north station, unlike the main station, is close to the city center and practically in the vicinity of the Audi plants , it is particularly used by schoolchildren, students and Audi employees who travel from the region.

Freight transport

Freight traffic plays a prominent role at Ingolstadt Nord station. Numerous freight trains with parts supplied to the Audi plants arrive there . These trains are separated in the station and shunted to the car manufacturer's plant connections. That is why there are extensive tracks that are in operation around the clock.

In Ingolstadt Nord there is also a route that is a few kilometers long and is still used for freight traffic. It branches out on the outskirts into various freight connections to an oil refinery , the InterPark industrial area (on the site of the former Shell refinery) and the Ingolstadt power plant .

Infrastructure

Incline warning sign

The station has extensive track systems, five of which have platforms with track numbers 3 to 7 and are served by passenger trains. Only the trains of the Munich-Nuremberg Express stop at tracks 4 and 5 - these are part of the new line . All platforms are 76 cm high. The platforms on tracks 3, 6 and 7 are 270 m long, while those on tracks 4 and 5 are 170 m long. All platforms have elevators; platforms 4 and 5 are only partially suitable for wheelchair users due to their steep incline. Apart from three ticket machines, two snack machines and a toilet booth, there are no services at the station.

The platforms of the new line are barely enough for a regional train with six cars. Half of the first or last car is at a stop outside the platform area. They are located on a longitudinal gradient of up to 20 per thousand and have been given special safety measures. These include anti-roll coverings and thresholds to stop unintentionally rolling objects and guide them towards the side walls. This makes the station the steepest regional station in Germany.

history

The station was extensively rebuilt as part of the new Nuremberg – Ingolstadt line. The station was part of the Ingolstadt junction , which also included the three-track expansion of the line to the main train station. The Free State of Bavaria commissioned the construction of platforms on the tracks of the new line in Ingolstadt Nord station. The start of the plan approval procedure for plan approval section 72 of the new line, from the south portal of the Audit Tunnel to the south bank of the Danube, was expected in January 1993. According to the planning status from 1994, the use of the station by regional trains on the new line was still an option.

The station building from 1869/1870 was demolished on March 6, 2010. From 2010 a new station building was built. An architectural competition took place in which the majority of the city council voted for the demolition of the reception building and the construction of a parking garage with 290 parking spaces and an integrated travel center. Last attempts to save the town by Ingolstadt citizens and a community of interests to preserve the historic building from 1869/1870 did not meet with approval in the city council and were rejected.

With the rebuilding of the station area, the historic station building, which still complied with the fortress regulations, disappeared, which provided for the short-term demolition of the then mostly wooden buildings in the event of war. The old building contained a ticket sales desk, baggage handling and a post-war kiosk. The footbridge crossing the railway system was replaced by an underpass that can be accessed from both sides, and spacious, covered bicycle parking facilities on both sides of the tracks complete the system.

In addition to the actual station building, the Ingolstadt Nord signal box, located near Theodor-Heuss-Strasse in the direction of Audi , the BayWa site with sales, silo building and petrol station area, as well as the green station forecourt and some side buildings of the railway and the corresponding station signs , also disappeared at the same time or at different times the foundry site.

In place of the historical building, a new station building was built, which essentially houses a few shops, a parking garage and the bus control center. There is a small bus station with a bus depot next to the building. A mural depicting the railway lines in the hall of the old station building was not transferred to the new building, contrary to press reports at the time, and there is no ticket office.

The corresponding lettering is on the new building, and a station clock is also not missing. There is a waiting area for airport bus passengers, the railway line has largely been provided with noise barriers, and a third track complements the former largely double-track connection between Ingolstadt Nord and Ingolstadt Hauptbahnhof. The new technical college / technical college was built on the former foundry site and the corresponding track systems were removed.

Former railway bridge at the park

The road-accompanying rails to the Despag spinning machine factory or Schubert & Salzer (starting near the old sawmill, in the area of today's McDonald’s ) and their ring connection with the Nordbahnhof industrial track in the direction of the refinery had already been shut down and removed in the post-war period . A pedestrian bridge in the district park and some rail fragments near the motorway as well as a few streets (e.g. formerly Schwarzer Weg, route via the Nordlichtkino-Büropa) are still a reminder today. The tracks in the direction of the military station in the city center disappeared with this, and a stop for the state horticultural show in today's Klenzepark was also abandoned.

There were also tracks in the direction of the refinery, Audi-GVZ (goods traffic center) and the Auditunnel. The restricted level crossing at Ringlerstrasse has been replaced by an underpass for cyclists and pedestrians. A pedestrian bridge connects Oberhaunstadt with the north-east of Ingolstadt. A relocation of an unrestricted level crossing on the Schneller Weg and the construction of a pedestrian underpass is planned.
