The Allgäu-Franken-Express is a train service from Deutsche Bahn between the Allgäu , Augsburg and Nuremberg . The trains of the 612 series , which are operationally classified as Regional Express , run at up to 160 km / h and, with a journey time between Nuremberg and Augsburg of 69 to 71 minutes, are just as fast as the ICE-T trains on ICE line 28 , but five Minutes faster than the ICE 2 type ICE trains (as of 2014).

development

The Allgäu-Franken-Express trains have been running since the timetable change on December 10, 2006 to replace some of the long-distance trains that have been using the Nuremberg – Ingolstadt – Munich high-speed route between Nuremberg and Munich and not via Augsburg, Donauwörth and Treuchtlingen.

Four pairs of trains were initially offered on working days between Nuremberg and Augsburg, three of them from and two to Lindau . Most of the trains between the two major cities stop in Donauwörth, some in the direction of Augsburg stop in Treuchtlingen . There was a similar offer at the weekend, with a pair of trains going from Augsburg to Kempten . When the timetable changed in December 2007, a pair of trains was extended to Oberstdorf .

According to Deutsche Bahn, the demand in the first few months of operation clearly exceeded expectations. In the first hundred days, the company counted around 200,000 passengers, with an upward trend. Above all, it is unexpected that many passengers from the Allgäu will not get off in Augsburg, but will drive through to Nuremberg. In the first year of operation, almost a million people used the new train service.

From the timetable change in December 2010, only two pairs of trains ran on weekdays. On Saturdays there was a third way to travel from the Allgäu to Nuremberg, but on Sundays and public holidays there was only one connection in this direction. The reason given by Deutsche Bahn was construction work on the Munich – Ingolstadt section, which is why some ICE trains between Munich and Nuremberg had to be run via Augsburg. According to the Bavarian state government, which is responsible for regulations in local transport in Bavaria, an early daily connection from Nuremberg to Oberstdorf and Lindau would be set up, "which enables day trips from the greater Nuremberg area to the Allgäu and to Lake Constance". The existing return journey in the evening from Oberstdorf and Lindau to Nuremberg would remain.

In the timetable years from 2012 to 2015, two trains from Nuremberg to Allgäu and three trains from Allgäu to Nuremberg ran from Monday to Saturday. On Sundays there were two trains in both directions. In the 2016 timetable, the offer was thinned out again, since then two pairs of trains have been running daily. With the timetable change in December 2017, the stops in Bobingen , Schwabmünchen, Biessenhofen and Günzach , which were previously only served in the direction of Nuremberg , were no longer available. With another timetable change in December 2018, a third connection will be added for each direction, so the train will run in each direction in the morning, at noon and in the evening. The timetable change in December 2019 will reduce the offer by one connection at lunchtime.

The contract for the Allgäu-Franken-Express expired in 2019. However, due to construction work on the Stuttgart-Mannheim route, it will also run temporarily in 2020.
