The Immenstadt – Oberstdorf railway is a branch line in Bavaria . It branches off the Buchloe – Lindau railway line in Immenstadt im Allgäu and leads via Sonthofen to Oberstdorf . It lies entirely in the Oberallgäu district and follows the course of the Iller along its entire length . It is operated by Deutsche Bahn and is called the Illertalbahn . The course book routes 970 and 975 run on it. In addition, the alex of the Länderbahn also runs on the route.

history

After Immenstadt had been connected to the railway network by the main line to Lindau since 1853 , Sonthofen tried to build a branch line . The 8.33 kilometer long Vizinalbahn went into operation on November 16, 1873 and was also operated by the Royal Bavarian State Railways. In Immenstadt, the new route was introduced from the east into the station, so that trains coming from Kempten (Allgäu) with the destination Oberstdorf have to change their direction there until today .

On July 29, 1888, the Lokalbahn Aktien-Gesellschaft (LAG) finally opened the 13.38-kilometer continuation to Oberstdorf, it was classified as a secondary railway . From then on there was a common terminus station with the state railway in Sonthofen . In addition, the private LAG also took over the management of the existing Immenstadt – Sonthofen section.

With the nationalization of the LAG on August 1, 1938, the Deutsche Reichsbahn was henceforth responsible for the entire route; it now belonged to the Reichsbahndirektion Augsburg . On October 2, 1949, the Deutsche Bundesbahn finally replaced the old Sonthofen station with the through station on the western outskirts of the city, which still exists today , on the route towards Oberstdorf. Due to the also new connecting curve, on which the new train station was also located, the route was shortened from 21.71 to 20.704 kilometers. In addition, it was now completely kilometers , while the LAG route still had its zero point in Sonthofen. Construction work on the new Sonthof train station began on November 15, 1937, but due to the war , it could only be continued from August 30, 1948.

The old Sonthofen station building - it was located on Promenadestrasse, opposite the confluence with Schnitzerstrasse - was demolished in 1962 as part of the redesign of Oberallgäuer Platz. The street name Am Alten Bahnhof reminds of the former station to this day.

The former LAG workshop in Oberstdorf was run as an independent depot until March 23, 1951, when it was converted into a branch of the Kempten depot.

On July 1, 1953, the Deutsche Bundesbahn moved the route between the bridge over the Breitach and the terminus, which originally ran parallel to Bundesstraße 19 , a little further north, along the Bannholz. This lengthened the route by about 300 meters. At that time, the municipality of Obersdorf acquired the old route between Rubinger Strasse and the freight station and laid the Alpgaustraße on it. This should relieve the Sonthofener Straße and pull traffic away from the center.

business

There is a regional express (RE) from Ulm to Oberstdorf every two hours and a regional express (RE) between Augsburg and Oberstdorf every two hours . These two lines are operated with DB class 612 railcars . In addition, an alex drives every two hours from Munich to Oberstdorf. The latter replaced the former Allgäu-Express in 2007 , which in turn was introduced in 2003 as a replacement for the former Interregio . The offer is supplemented by individual trains that only run between Kempten or Immenstadt and Oberstdorf.

In long-distance traffic there are two pairs of trains . On the one hand the Intercity Allgäu from Dortmund to Oberstdorf and back. This train runs in the direction of Oberstdorf from Ulm as a regional express and can be used here with local transport tickets. In the direction of Dortmund it is an intercity all the way. The Intercity Nebelhorn also runs from Hamburg to Oberstdorf and back.
