The station Filderstadt (until 28 May 1983 Bernhausen ) is the current terminus of the railway line from Stuttgart-Rohr . Line S2 of the Stuttgart S-Bahn ends and begins here. The structure is part of the Stuttgart airport tunnel . The extension of the route to Neuhausen / Fildern is being planned.

According to the city, 11,000 passengers transfer at the station every day.

history

In 1891 the Filderbahn company planned a new railway line from Möhringen to Echterdingen . A local railway committee founded at the same time , with participants from Neuhausen , Bernhausen, Ober- and Untersielmingen and Denkendorf , wanted to continue from Echterdingen to Zell am Neckar . But they were unsuccessful. Instead, on April 14, 1896, the Foreign Ministry approved the construction of a meter- gauge narrow - gauge railway Möhringen – Neuhausen . Its inauguration took place on December 23, 1897. Regular operations began the following day.

Bernhausen train station was laid out south of the village. The reception building from that time is still preserved. It is a Württemberg unit train station of type IIIa, which the Filderbahn-Gesellschaft had built slightly modified. The building housed waiting, service and living rooms. The goods shed no longer exists. Here, the Briem cabbage factory and the local farmers mainly loaded pointed cabbage into the freight cars. The line was changed to standard gauge on November 1, 1902. In 1903, the Sunday excursion traffic increased when the Swabian Alb Association opened a new observation tower on the Uhlberg , south of Plattenhardt .

In 1914 a bus line went into operation that ran from Degerloch via Bernhausen to Nürtingen . It competed with the Filderbahn for a short time, but then had to be discontinued after the outbreak of the First World War.

On October 1, 1920, the Deutsche Reichsbahn opened a new line from Rohr to Echterdingen and took over the Echterdingen – Neuhausen section from the municipal Filderbahn (SFB). This section remained the property of SFB, which became part of the Stuttgarter Straßenbahnen AG (SSB) on January 1, 1934 . From 1925, more and more truck owners started offering trips to Stuttgart . In 1927 the bus connection from Degerloch to Nürtingen was resumed.

In 1937 construction of the Stuttgart-Echterdingen airport began . To make room for him, the railway line between Echterdingen and Bernhausen had to be relocated. In future it ran south of the airport.

After the Second World War, the SSB recorded further growth on its bus line N (Degerloch – Nürtingen). As an improvement, the municipalities of Bernhausen and Sielmingen demanded the extension of the Möhringen – Echterdingen tram. However, the city administration of Stuttgart rejected this in 1952. The number of travelers on the Stuttgart-Rohr – Neuhausen railway line continued to fall. Therefore, the Deutsche Bundesbahn decided to stop passenger traffic on August 1, 1955. The SSB continued to use the Leinfelden – Neuhausen section for freight traffic.

On January 1, 1975, the municipalities of Bernhausen , Bonlanden , Plattenhardt , Sielmingen and Harthausen merged to form the municipality of Filderlinden, which was renamed Filderstadt on July 25, 1975.

In the 1980s, the Federal Railroad planned to connect the airport to a specially designed S-Bahn network. To do this, she needed the Stuttgart-Rohr-Echterdingen section. It should be expanded and electrified in two ways. A train service between Leinfelden and Neuhausen was therefore no longer possible. On May 28, 1983, the last freight train served Bernhausen station. Shortly afterwards, the dismantling of the tracks began. Initially, the station building was no longer used. But the Filderstadt History and Local History Association campaigned for its preservation.

The Federal Railroad planned to continue the so-called airport S-Bahn back in the 1980s. The final implementation took place on February 13, 1998. On this day the construction of the underground route from the airport train station to Bernhausen began. On September 29, 2001, Deutsche Bahn AG opened the new Filderstadt tunnel station.

The naming keeps causing confusion among external passengers. In contrast to other train stations and stops, Filderstadt train station does not bear the name of the respective place (Bernhausen), but that of the entire community. The above-ground bus hub is still called Bernhausen Bahnhof .

On November 12, 2011, the station area was named Dr.-Peter-Bümlein-Platz in honor of Dr. Peter Bümlein, who was Lord Mayor of Filderstadt for over 24 years and made a significant contribution to the construction of the S-Bahn to Filderstadt. The bus stop was renamed Bernhausen Bahnhof (Dr.-Peter-Bümlein-Platz) at the same time , but the S-Bahn station is still only called Filderstadt .

Building

The old route was not reactivated in Filderstadt. Much more, Deutsche Bahn AG built a new underground building below the old railway site. The station, which is made of exposed concrete, is designed in such a way that further construction to Neuhausen is possible. There are already plans to extend the line to Neuhausen, but the start of construction has been postponed again and again. According to the current status (July 2019), commissioning of this section is not expected until mid-2026 at the earliest.

Passengers can access the 210 meter long central platform via a western and an eastern entrance. The western entrance is park-like, with a gently sloping green area with a water staircase and a sculpture called Filderspiel . The group of sculptures also continues on the platform.

In 2001 the city of Filderstadt had the historic reception building renovated. It houses a tourist information office and the citizens' office. Due to its central location, on the square between Karlstrasse and Filderbahnstrasse, it marks the station.

Rail operations

The station is served by the Stuttgart S-Bahn. The S-Bahn line S2 ends and begins here. Tracks 1 and 2 are used alternately as departure and arrival tracks.

The Filderstadt station belongs to station category 5 of the Deutsche Bahn AG.

The Stuttgart Region Association intends to enable rapid turns (and thus greater turning time reserves) in Filderstadt in the future by purchasing additional S-Bahn vehicles .
