The Leinfelden train station is located at 20.6 km on the Stuttgart-Rohr – Filderstadt railway line and is a station in the Stuttgart S-Bahn network . According to the railway building and operating regulations, however, it is not a train station , but a stopping point .
From June 23, 1928 to October 1, 1971 (track dismantling 1972) the Siebenmühlentalbahn branched off from the Rohr - Neuhausen railway line in Leinfelden . Passenger traffic was discontinued on May 22, 1955. From October 1, 1956, freight trains only ran to Musberg.
Since October 2015, the Leinfelder Bahnhof has been a four-track shared station of the Stuttgart S-Bahn and the Stuttgart Stadtbahn .
history
Reichsbahn time
On October 1, 1920, the Deutsche Reichsbahn opened the Rohr– Echterdingen railway line . The Leinfelden train station was to the north and outside of the 1,000-inhabitant village. The two-storey reception building with a hipped roof is no longer preserved. The outer facade of the upper floor was clad with wooden shingles.
Also on October 1, 1920, the municipal Filderbahn (SFB) started operating the normal-gauge section from Unteraichen to Leinfelden . In return, it closed the Unteraichen – Echterdingen line. Due to the competition with the Reichsbahn, the SFB could not maintain the Möhringen –Leinfelden route for long and stopped all traffic on December 25, 1922.
But the route via Vaihingen soon turned out to be the less favorable. The municipal administrations of Echterdingen and Leinfelden therefore sought talks with the Stuttgart city administration, the Reichsbahn and the Stuttgarter Straßenbahnen AG (SSB). They asked for reactivation (with re-gauging to meter gauge) and electrification of the line to Möhringen and for further construction to Echterdingen. With the consent of all parties, construction began in the spring of 1927. The overland tram to Leinfelden was completed on January 2, 1928. Again by the SFB, which became part of the SSB on January 1, 1934.
After a long construction period, the Reichsbahn was able to inaugurate the Leinfelden – Waldenbuch line on June 23, 1928 . The city of Stuttgart had previously planned to build the line as a narrow-gauge railway to Tübingen . A trolley pit for freight cars was to be set up in Leinfelden .
From March 15 to 16, 1944, the community suffered a heavy air raid. The station building was destroyed. From the beginning of April to the end of May and beginning of October 1944, the Wehrmacht stationed a railway anti-aircraft battery in the area of the station . It served to defend the airport and Stuttgart.
Federal Railroad Time
After the Second World War , a simple one-story station building was built. The Deutsche Bundesbahn recorded a decline in passenger numbers on the Stuttgart-Rohr – Neuhausen railway line and on the Siebenmühlentalbahn. They decided to shut down both routes for passenger traffic . This took place on May 22, 1955 on the Siebenmühlentalbahn and on August 1, 1955 on the Stuttgart-Rohr-Neuhausen railway. The routes remained for the time being for freight traffic .
Leinfelden developed into an ambitious residential community in the 1950s and 1960s . The population increased sharply. On April 26, 1965, the Ministry of the Interior granted Leinfelden city rights.
An ideas competition was held to create a suitable center for the young city. The new center of Leinfelder should be built on the large area of the train station. The tram line should run underground in the future.
On January 1, 1975, the city of Leinfelden and the communities of Echterdingen, Musberg and Stetten auf den Fildern merged to form the city of Leinfelden-Echterdingen . After the unification, the administration rejected the old plans and proposed a new city center between Leinfelden and Echterdingen.
For the planned Stuttgart S-Bahn , the Federal Railroad planned to reactivate the Leinfelden station. To do this, she rebuilt the old site and tore down the reception building.
On November 1, 1990, the SSB switched the tram line to Leinfelden to light rail operation and shut down the route to Echterdingen-Ort. On April 18, 1993, the Federal Railroad opened the Oberaichen - Airport section for the S-Bahn lines S2 and S3.
outlook
In the course of Stuttgart 21 , switch connections are to be created west of the station. They are to be expanded again after the construction work is completed.
Building
In order to determine the location of the station at the end of the 1980s , the Federal Railroad planned two variants. On the one hand the realized one, on the other hand the platforms would have been built north of today's large underpass . This would have created access to the Filderhalle. To the south of it, Robert Bosch GmbH would have been given a siding .
Those responsible opted for the southern variant. Since the city administration wanted to design the new structure as a point of attraction, it contradicted the planned five and a half meter wide pedestrian tunnel. Instead, they decided to build an eleven and a half meter wide underpass in a trough construction. This creates a connection between Marktstrasse and Max-Lang-Strasse. They are spanned by an 80-meter-long roof, which, thanks to its height, makes the traffic structure visible from afar. The city paid for the underpass and the roof.
The freight yard with loading lane and siding for the Bosch company, on the other hand, was not realized on Max-Lang-Strasse . Leinfelden remained a stopping point. A previously unused bridge over the underpass, which was intended for this track, was rebuilt for the relocation of the light rail to the areas that had been kept free.
Rail operations
The stop is served by lines S2 and S3 of the Stuttgart S-Bahn. Track 1 is used for the S-Bahn in the direction of the airport / exhibition center, track 2 for those in the direction of Rohr.
According to Deutsche Bahn AG, the Leinfelden station corresponds to station category 4.

Light rail
At the Leinfelden Bahnhof stop on the eastern station forecourt on Max-Lang-Straße, which was served until October 2015, the U 5 light rail line began and ended. By October 2015, the route with the stop was relocated to the DB stop and connected to it. Since then there has been a combined platform between tracks 2 (S-Bahn towards Rohr) and 3 (Stadtbahn from Möhringen) . The tram always departs from platform 4. The previous tram stop was shut down after the new section of the route went into operation.
