The passenger station Kornwestheim (short Kornwestheim Pbf ) is a station in the network of the Stuttgart S-Bahn . This is where the Stuttgart-Untertürkheim-Kornwestheim freight bypass line ("Schusterbahn") joins the Frankenbahn. Until December 2007, a car train loading facility was in operation in Kornwestheim Pbf .

history

Start time

During the construction of the Württemberg Central Railway from Stuttgart to Ludwigsburg , Kornwestheim also received a station. The halt, which opened on October 15, 1846, was about one kilometer from the village. The travelers reached it via the initially unsurfaced Seegasse (roughly today's Bahnhofstrasse and Güterbahnhofstrasse).

Initially a one-story building, the reception building was later given another floor. On the first floor there was a waiting room and a service room. Upstairs was the apartment of the station master, who was also responsible for the community's postal system until 1891.

In 1852 the northern line between Stuttgart and Bietigheim received a second track , which began traffic in the direction of Stuttgart in the area of the stop. Because of the increasing movement of goods, the station was equipped with a goods shed in 1865.

Kornwestheim's first marshalling yard

In order to relieve the Stuttgart central station, the management of the state railway planned a freight bypass railway, which should enable a direct connection between the east and north railways . Two marshalling yards were planned at each end point . From Zuffenhausen as the end point had to be waived because of the unpleasant terrain. Instead, the flat surface in Kornwestheim turned out to be ideal.

The first marshalling yard was 1,700 meters long and had 15 tracks. The old station building was removed and rebuilt a few meters to the east. It has remained that way to this day. At that time it served as a goods handling point and as accommodation for railway employees. For the administration and the travelers, a new brick entrance building was built on the western side, because most of the travelers were waiting for the trains to Stuttgart. There were also two new office buildings on the western side. A locomotive depot and a military loading ramp for the regiments in Ludwigsburg were built on the eastern track field .

Former reception building on the west side

The opening of the Untertürkheim – Kornwestheim railway and the enlarged station took place on September 30, 1896. Also, King William II. Took part in the opening ceremony. Gradually the appearance of the community changed. With the arrival of many railway workers and workers, the population increased.

The marshalling yard was soon overloaded. In 1907 the state railroad examined its enlargement, but only a new building in another location was possible. The new marshalling yard and freight yard was opened on July 29, 1918. In future, the two stations were distinguished by the abbreviations Rbf and Pbf .

Reichsbahn time

In 1929, the Deutsche Reichsbahn completed the four-track expansion between Post 12 (south of Kornwestheim Pbf) and Ludwigsburg. With the electrification of the northern line between Stuttgart and Ludwigsburg, Kornwestheim was connected to the Stuttgart suburb traffic on May 15, 1933 . In 1935, Mayor Kercher requested a new reception building for his Kornwestheim, which was recently declared a town. This time again on the east side of the tracks. However, it did not materialize.

Federal Railroad Time

In the 1960s, motorail trains were increasingly offered. The Deutsche Bundesbahn set up a car loading station for this purpose. The first motorail trains ran between Kornwestheim Pbf and Villach Hbf in 1962 .

The new reception building was inaugurated on October 10, 1992. It houses shops, offices and apartments. It consists of two five-story buildings at right angles that have been painted white. The large glass roof between the buildings, which creates a unity, is particularly impressive. There is the eastern access to the platform underpass.

outlook

Additional parking spaces are to be created in Kornwestheim for newly purchased S-Bahn multiple units. The Stuttgart Region Association decided on April 22, 2020 to commission a corresponding planning ( service phases 1 to 4).

The S-Bahn station is to be made barrier-free by 2030.
