As a result of the municipal reform in Baden-Württemberg since 1975, the former municipality of giltstein is one of today's eight districts of Herrenberg .

geography

Validstein is located in the upper Ammertal , around three kilometers south to south-east of the Herrenberg core town .

history

The first mention of Gvalstein can be found in 769 in a document from the Lorsch Codex on the occasion of a donation to the Lorsch Monastery . The place was then called Giselstete , later Giselsteten, Gilistan, Gilisten and Gilsten. It is believed that the place was founded in the 6th or 7th century. The right of patronage and most of the property in giltstein belonged to the Hirsau monastery for a long time .

In the 11th century the name of a high medieval castle Gilistein / Gilstein superseded the actual place name. Two castles have probably gone: the "upper castle" and the "castle stables". Hirsau Monastery had perhaps been owned by the Counts of Calw since it was founded , which was significantly enlarged through donations and exchanges from the Zähringer , the Counts of Kirchberg, as well as those of Dusslingen and Salzstetten , and enabled the establishment of a provost's office, which was mentioned in 1299. Of the local nobility mentioned 1150-1391, who were often called Machtolf, Konrad, Swigger or Gottfried der Roller von Validstein , the Count Palatine of Tübingen acquired the castle and a share of the place in 1302 and 1328. With this, in 1382, the bailiwick of the Hirsau property fell to Württemberg. In 1417, giltstein was part of the upper office of the Schönbuch.

In 1784 there was a great fire in which almost the entire place was destroyed. The town center was then redesigned on a rectangular floor plan.

On July 1, 1975, Validstein was incorporated into Herrenberg.

Partnership tree in Amplepuis

On October 18, 1970, the partnership with the small French town of Amplepuis in Beaujolais Vert was established. Since then, there has been a regular exchange with the associations and municipal representatives. 2020 is the 50th anniversary of the town twinning with Amplepuis.

For the 40-year partnership, the artist Lutz Ackermann designed a partnership tree together with Ludwig Epple from Validstein , which was cut out of a two-meter-high iron plate. It documents the encounters between Amplepuis and Validstein over the past 49 years. One copy of this partnership tree can be found on the Rathausplatz in Amplepuis and one on the Partnership Square in Validstein.

In 2019, gilt stone celebrates its 1250th anniversary with many events and a festival weekend lasting several days.

Attractions

Peterskirche

The Peterskirche in winter, seen from the former town hall

The Peterskirche (also called Petruskirche ) forms the center of the historic town center. A first previous building was built around 700. On its foundations, today's church was initially built as a fortified fortified church , which was surrounded by fortifications with towers. The Romanesque core of the nave and the ground floor of the tower with its barrel vault date from the 12th century; the year 1091 is often mentioned. Between 1450 and 1500 the main part of the nave and the choir were built in the Gothic style . After the local fire of 1784, which also damaged St. Peter's Church, the south portal and the octagonal upper floor of the tower were built; In addition, large parts of the surrounding fortifications were removed, so that today only an approx. 2 m high surrounding wall is preserved, which forms a garden courtyard around the church.

From the interior of the church, in addition to the brightly painted star vault of the choir with beautiful keystones , the life-size crucifix from the 16th century, the baptismal font and the pulpit shaped like a calyx from the 18th century as well as the baroque organ (1786) are particularly noteworthy. In 1985, a window on the south side was designed by Wolf Dieter Kohler, which depicts the Pentecost miracle, the “wonderful fish haul” and Peter's confession. The church was last renovated in 1985 and 1989/90. In 1991 the 900th anniversary of the church was celebrated; A restoration of the surrounding wall is currently planned.

Some old epitaphs are walled in on the outside of the enclosure wall . From the bell of the church tower you have a beautiful view over the town center and the surrounding area.

Validstein Castle and burial chapel

In 1907/1908, the important railway engineer and entrepreneur Otto Kapp von giltstein (1853–1920) built a villa with a separate gatekeeper's lodge, known as the giltstein palace or the giltstein palace, on the then 5  hectare site on the road to Herrenberg (today Schlossstrasse ) referred to as. Both parts of the building are kept in the style of historicism and use predominantly Romanesque architectural elements; the external state of preservation is good. The castle was later expanded and converted into a rest home; today it houses a conference center of the KVJS . The villa is surrounded by an extensive park with beautiful old trees, ponds and leisure facilities.

In the old cemetery, the octagonal mausoleum, also built in 1908, in the neo-Romanesque style of the Kapp von giltstein family is remarkable; Otto Kapp had it built right here on the Herrenberg – Tübingen railway line, and after his death on October 19, 1920, he found final peace in it, as did his wife and son, who had died before him.

More Attractions

Several well-preserved half-timbered houses in the historic town center are still worth seeing. The former town hall standing opposite the church protrudes from it, which was rebuilt in 1786 after the local fire and today serves as a district office. The former sandstone village well, also built in 1786, is now in a private garden at the intersection of Altinger Strasse and Ammerstrasse, but is still visible.
