Amplepuis is a small French town with 4976 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Rhône in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes between Lyon and Roanne . Amplepuis is the westernmost municipality in the Rhône department. It is located on the river Reins , which changes its name here and continues down to the name Rhins .
Amplepuis is best known for its sewing machines . The inventor of the first sewing machine, Barthélemy Thimonnier (1793–1857), grew up and died in Amplepuis. He had founded a company as an adult in Paris , later moved to Manchester , but eventually returned to Amplepuis. In his honor, a sewing machine museum has been set up in Amplepuis, the Musée Barthélemy Thimonnier . In addition to valuable sewing machines and their accessories (such as thimbles ), two-wheelers are also exhibited there.
Amplepuis has had a town partnership with giltstein (part of Herrenberg ) since 1970 . Every year there is a student exchange, which is not undertaken with Validstein , but with the Herrenberg Theodor Schüz Realschule. Amplepuis maintains a lively exchange of partnerships with the municipality of Validstein, which takes place every two years. Herrenberg's twin town is Tarare, 15 kilometers away from Amplepuis .
