Theodor Christoph Schüz (born March 26, 1830 in Tumlingen , † June 17, 1900 in Düsseldorf ) was a German painter of the Düsseldorf School .

Life

Schüz was the youngest son of a Protestant pastor's family. First he trained as a notary in Herrenberg . He then began to study art in Stuttgart , which was continued in October 1856 in the class of antiquities at the Academy in Munich . Schüz became a master student of the respected history painter Carl von Piloty . In 1866 he moved to Düsseldorf, where he died on June 17, 1900. His sons Friedrich and Hans were also painters, his son Martin, who painted watercolors, became a Protestant pastor in Haigerloch.

He became known to a wider audience as an illustrator of Ottilie Wildermuth's youthful works . His best-known picture, “Midday Prayer at Harvest”, was painted by Schüz in 1861. It came into the possession of the predecessor of the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart in 1862 and was exhibited in 1867 at the World Exhibition in Paris . His painting style is late romantic , and this picture also shows his religious character.
