Ranchal is a French municipality with 319 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Rhône in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the arrondissement of Villefranche-sur-Saône and the canton of Thizy-les-Bourgs (until 2015: canton of Lamure-sur-Azergues ). The inhabitants are called ranchalais .

Ranchal is located 52 kilometers north-northwest of Lyon , about 27 kilometers east-northeast of Roanne and about 28 kilometers northwest of Villefranche-sur-Saône . Ranchal is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Belleroche in the north, Poule-les-Écharmeaux in the east, Saint-Nizier-d'Azergues in the southeast, Saint-Bonnet-le-Troncy in the south, Saint-Vincent-de-Reins in the south and southwest, Cours with Thel in the west and Belmont-de-la-Loire in the northwest.
