Life

Voigt's portrait of Queen Caroline Mathilde (1773) in the Royal Collection , London

Voigts was baptized on July 30, 1747 in Braunschweig. Nothing is known about his training. From 1773 to 1777 he worked in Celle , where he created both dated and signed miniature portraits of the exiled Queen Caroline Mathilde and a portrait of the Hanoverian officer Wilhelm von Alten .

From 1778 he worked in Schleswig and Friedrich Christian Carstens was his pupil from Easter 1778 to Easter 1781. He then moved to Kiel, where on March 24, 1794, despite the favorable application requirements, he unsuccessfully applied for the position of university drawing teacher. Until the end of his life he worked as a drawing teacher at the Kiel city school. Here professor portraits and views of Schleswig-Holstein were created, which were also available as a subscription and as a portfolio. Most of his works are in museums in Schleswig-Holstein and Denmark. Voigts also worked as a wax boss.
