Gertrude Saunders

Gertrude Saunders (born August 25, 1903 in North Carolina , † April 1991 in Beverly (Massachusetts) ) was an American actress and singer.

Career

Saunders sang 1921 on the recordings of the Black Devils of James Tim Brymn for Okeh Records . In the following years she was one of the actors who appeared in 1921/22 in Shuffle Along and 1922/23 in the Broadway show Liza . In 1926 she played the title role in Irvin C. Miller's Red Hot Mama . Then Jack Gee, Bessie Smith's husband , had an affair with her and financed her a show.

In 1932 she appeared in the Broadway revue Blackberries of 1932 . She later starred in the films The Toy Wife (1938), Big Timers (1945) and Sepia Cinderella (1947).
