The Stuttgart-Möhringen – Stuttgart-Vaihingen railway line is initially a meter-gauge , from 1902 meter and standard-gauge railway line that was built by the Filderbahn company . Today the route is largely used by the Stuttgart Stadtbahn with the lines U3, U8 and U12.

history

Filderbahn Society

After the successes of the railways in the northern Filder region, the places in the southern area of the Filder plateau tried to establish a rail connection, and rail committees were founded in various places. After the funds for the construction loads had come together in the places, the Filderbahn-Gesellschaft submitted license applications for the Möhringen – Vaihingen and Möhringen – Neuhausen routes, which were granted on April 14, 1896. In the fall of 1896, construction work for the meter-gauge line began. For this purpose, the routing of the existing Degerloch - Hohenheim line in Möhringen was changed and a new train station was built to replace the previous through-town passage.

There were delays in the construction, so that both routes could not be opened until December 19, 1897. Regular passenger traffic began on December 24th. There were no special celebrations. As of July 1st, general cargo traffic was also started. In the spring of 1898 a trolley pit was built in Vaihingen so that from September 16, 1898, standard-gauge freight wagons could also be transported on both routes. Freight traffic developed so well that a second trolley pit became necessary as early as 1899.

In 1901/1902 the Degerloch – Vaihingen line was electrified. At the same time, the line was expanded to three tracks so that the freight traffic could be carried out by standard gauge wagons without roll stands. In addition, the route in Vaihingen was extended via the state train station to the Leicht brewery and put into operation on May 1, 1904.

On January 15, 1915, traffic to Vaihingen Ort was stopped again and the copper contact line for raw material extraction was dismantled.

From 1920: City of Stuttgart

In 1920 the Filderbahn was sold by the Württemberg branch lines . From March 1st, the Möhringen – Vaihingen route went to the city of Stuttgart, which commissioned the Stuttgart trams (SSB) to operate it.

On October 29, 1929, the line to Vaihingen Ort (Schillerplatz) was put back into operation and a connection to the SSB network was established. In 1934 the Filderbahn passed from the city to the SSB. In the following, the traffic was integrated into the tram network, but still managed according to the EBO . The route was also recorded in the course book.

Passenger traffic to the Reichsbahnhof Vaihingen was stopped on May 15, 1944. On November 1, 1954, the Vaihinger line was extended to Rohr . In 1963 the line between Möhringen and Vaihingen was expanded to two tracks.

After the planning for the light rail construction on the Fildern took on concrete trains, the freight traffic between Vaihingen and Möhringen was given up in advance on August 31, 1981 because the Möhringen station was being converted for the light rail. Since then there has only been tram traffic on the route. The section was upgraded to standard gauge, the third rail removed. In 1983 the bridge in Vaihingen was rebuilt over the railway. On September 28, 1985, the tram began operating, the terminus and the connection to the rest of the tram network are now in front of Vaihingen station. The former platform was on the other side, until 1983 there was a pedestrian walkway from the Filderbahn platform to the state railway platform.
