The Stuttgart-Möhringen – Stuttgart-Hohenheim railway is a former railway line in the city of Stuttgart . Today it is integrated into the Stuttgart Stadtbahn between Stuttgart-Möhringen and Stuttgart-Plieningen and is used by the U3 line. The remaining section to Stuttgart-Hohenheim , which is around 700 meters long, has been closed ; it is currently operated by bus lines 65, 70, 74 and 76 of the Stuttgart trams (SSB).

The Möhringer train station, starting point for the route to Hohenheim

As a continuation of 1884 opened Stuttgart Rack Railway which opened Filderbahn Society (FBG) in December 1888 a - sometimes Upper Filderbahn called - meterspurige Adhäsionsstrecke of Degerloch over Möhringen to Hohenheim. It was operated as a steam tram and used the Stuttgart-Degerloch – Stuttgart-Möhringen line to Möhringen , and from Möhringen the route covered here. Until shortly after the turn of the century, the first Möhringen train station was at the intersection of Vaihinger Strasse and Rembrandtstrasse, the latter of which was still called Stuttgarter Strasse at the time.

With the relocation of the Möhringen station in 1902, the Hohenheim line between Möhringen and Plieningen was completely re-routed and electrified at the same time. It no longer followed Rembrandtstrasse, Plieninger Strasse and Filderhauptstrasse, but was given its own route.

From 1921 the Hohenheim route, like all lines of the Filderbahn, was operated by the SSB. From 1934 this was finally also the owner and gradually expanded it. The line to Hohenheim received a three - rail track to carry out standard-gauge freight traffic (from Stuttgart-Vaihingen ) .

In 1967 freight traffic was given up and the route to Plieningen was shortened. A turning loop was created there for the trams on line 31, and from then on the GT4 articulated multiple units could be used here as well. At the same time, the SSB pushed for the double-track expansion, which was completed at the beginning of the 1980s. The Hohenheim route was one of the last single-track sections in the SSB network. In 1981 it was also rededicated as a tram route according to BOStrab .

In the course of the progressive expansion of the Stuttgart urban railway, a trial run of the tramway with the three DT 8 prototypes began on the Möhringen – Plieningen section from February 1983 . In 1985, line 3 was finally converted to light rail operation. As early as May 1985, after the track system had been rebuilt, meter gauge trains could no longer travel to Plieningen, making the line the first pure light rail line in the SSB network.
