The Möhringer train station

The Stuttgart-Degerloch – Stuttgart-Möhringen railway is a former railway line in the city of Stuttgart . Today it is integrated into the Stuttgart Stadtbahn , a short section in Degerloch is used by the Stuttgart rack railway .

history

As a continuation of 1884 opened Stuttgart Rack Railway which opened Filderbahn Society (FBG) in December 1888 a - sometimes Upper Filderbahn called - meterspurige Adhäsionsstrecke of Degerloch Möhringen of Hohenheim . It was operated as a steam tram and used the route covered here as far as Möhringen. There it went over to the Stuttgart-Möhringen – Stuttgart-Hohenheim railway line . Until shortly after the turn of the century, the first Möhringen train station was at the intersection of Vaihinger Strasse and Rembrandtstrasse, the latter of which was still called Stuttgarter Strasse at the time.

With the relocation of Möhringen station in 1902, the Degerloch line was also re-routed and electrified at the same time. In 1921, as with all lines of the Filderbahn company, management was also transferred to the Stuttgart trams (SSB). From 1934 this was finally also the owner and gradually expanded it. For example, the line received a second track, which was developed as a three - rail track in order to be able to carry out standard-gauge freight traffic from Stuttgart-Vaihingen . As a special feature, the tram trains in the direction of Möhringen had to drive on the wrong track (that is, in left-hand traffic ) when a freight train was in the direction of Degerloch.

In 1967 freight traffic was abandoned and the three-rail track was replaced by an ordinary meter-gauge track. In 1981 the route was finally rededicated as a tram route according to BOStrab . As early as 1990, two three-rail tracks were available again, at that time light rail operations began on the U5 and U6 lines in standard gauge. The route continued to serve meter-gauge trams as access to the main workshop in the SSB center in Möhringen, these trips took place until 2008.
