The Kukkiwon , also known as World Taekwondo Headquarters ( World Taekwondo Headquarters ), and location of the World Taekwondo Academy ( World Taekwondo Academy ) is the official Taekwondo -Regierungsorganisation South Korea . It is overseen by the Department of International Sport of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

history

The seat of the Kukkiwon is 635 Yeoksam-Dong ( 역삼동 ) in the Gangnam-Gu ( 강남구 ) district of the South Korean capital Seoul . Construction of the main building began on November 19, 1971, and construction work ended on November 30, 1972, with the official name of Kukkiwon not being announced until February 6, 1973. 3000 spectators can be accommodated in the integrated competition facility. The three-story building is covered with blue Kiwa roof tiles , similar to the official residence of the South Korean President .

In May 1973, the Kukkiwon and the Korean Taekwondo Association organized the first Taekwondo World Championships with 200 competitors from 17 countries. The Kukkiwon has had a demo team since September 1974.

Kim Un-yong was the first president of the Kukkiwon and resigned from his post on November 15, 2001. He was followed by Uhm Woon-kyu, the member of the Chung Do Kwans was elected on March 2, 2004. In February 2010 he was replaced by Lee Seung-wan. In July 2010, Kang Won-sik became the next Kukkiwon president and held the office until mid-2013. The current president is Choi Young Ryul.

tasks

The Kukkiwon sees itself as a global center for the training of Taekwondo teachers. It is home to the World Taekwondo Academy and issues official Dan and Poom certificates. The main objectives are:

  • To help people strengthen their intellectual and physical strength by spreading Taekwondo as a cultural asset
  • To present the philosophy and possibilities of Taekwondo in order to increase the national prestige of Korea abroad

competition

Entrance to Kukkiwon.

According to the rules of World Taekwondo (WT), participants in WT competitions must wear a black belt ( poom or dan ) confirmed by the Kukkiwon . There are 21 articles in the Kukkiwon Regulations regarding Poom and Dan exams. According to Article 2, these apply to all students and teachers of the national WT Taekwondo associations. In Article 4, the WT is required to support the national associations in the smooth implementation of Dan exams.

Kukkiwon has made a significant contribution to Taekwondo being introduced to the Asian Games since Seoul in 1986 and an Olympic sport since the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney .

Exams and Graduations

Article 8 of the Kukkiwon Examination Regulations sets limits on preparation time and age for examinations of higher grades; i.e. the minimum length of time that an examination candidate must hold his degree before the next examination is possible - as well as the minimum age for admission to the examination. Up to and including 5th Dan, the age limits are taken into account as to whether the candidate once wore a poom . The boundaries are not rigid, however; for example, exceptions may be made under Article 17 for winners of the Olympic Games or other major world tournaments. Article 18 allows Taekwondo athletes without a Kukkiwon degree (e.g. non-members of the WTF) to apply for a Kukkiwon certificate.

Demo team

At Kukkiwon, some athletes work full-time in a “demo team”; a group that demonstrates the possibilities of Taekwondo in performances worldwide. In an interview in the mid-1990s, team leader Choe Man-seek described the role of the group:

"We travel to many countries promoting Taekwondo and doing promotional work for the [World Taekwondo] Federation. The team has performed every year in Europe, Asia and Africa ... Kukkiwon dispatches their World Demonstration Team to promote Taekwondo in these countries as well as in other countries where Taekwondo has not yet spread "

“We travel to many countries and promote Taekwondo and the [World Taekwondo] Federation there. The team had performances in Europe, Asia and Africa every year ... The Kukkiwon sends its demo team to support Taekwondo in these countries as well as in other countries where Taekwondo is not yet widespread. "

- Choe Man-seek

Many team members have won South Korean championships; all have 3rd to 5th Dan.

tourism

In addition to its main role as a government organ, the Kukkiwon is a major tourist attraction for visitors to Seoul. The Kukkiwon offers a “Taekwondo Experience Program” for 20,000  (approx. € 15). This introduces basic postures, self-defense, and break tests. The online newspaper The Seoul Times has reported that the Kukkiwon may move to the Muju Taekwondo Park , which is expected to open in 2013.
