The Stuttgart-Möhringen train station (now known as Möhringen train station ) is an important hub in the Stuttgart light rail network . In the past, Möhringen station was the operating center of the Filderbahn-Gesellschaft (FBG) with a total of four railway lines running here.

history

In 1891 the Filderbahn-Gesellschaft (FBG) decided to build a line from Möhringen to Vaihinger Bahnhof , which the royal government approved on April 14, 1896. After a year and a half of construction, the first scheduled train ran on December 23, 1897 in Möhringen towards Vaihingen.

As a continuation of the Marienplatz – Degerloch cog railway opened in 1884, the FBG opened a meter-gauge adhesion line - sometimes also called the Obere Filderbahn - from Degerloch via Möhringen to Hohenheim in December 1888 , which was operated as a steam tram . At Möhringen station it went over to the Möhringen – Hohenheim line . Until shortly after the turn of the century, the first Möhringen train station was at the intersection of Vaihinger Strasse and Rembrandtstrasse , the latter of which was still called Stuttgarter Strasse at the time .

The places in the southern area of the Filder plateau tried to establish a railway connection after the successes of the railways in the northern Filder area. For this purpose, railway committees were founded in various places. After the funds for the construction work had come together in the places, the FBG submitted license applications for the Möhringen– Vaihingen and Möhringen– Neuhausen routes, which were granted on April 14, 1896. In the autumn of 1896, construction work for the meter-gauge routes began. To this end, the routing of the existing Degerloch – Möhringen and Möhringen – Hohenheim lines in Möhringen was changed and a new train station was built. In the course of the construction work, the previous through-town was replaced. There were delays in the construction, so that both routes could not be opened until December 19, 1897. On December 24, 1897, regular passenger traffic began on both routes.

With the relocation of Möhringen station in 1902, the Degerloch line was also re-routed and electrified at the same time. In 1921, as with all lines of the Filderbahn company, management was also transferred to the Stuttgart trams (SSB). From 1934 this was finally also the owner and expanded it gradually. The tracks on the Degerloch – Vaihingen line were fitted with a third rail, and the Möhringen – Neuhausen line was converted entirely to standard gauge and straightened. On October 1, 1902, the Möhringen – Echterdingen section was reopened, and the Echterdingen – Neuhausen section a month later .

Due to the war, the Württembergische Nebenbahnen AG (successor to the Filderbahn-Gesellschaft) stopped the connection from Möhringen to Vaihingen Ort on April 15, 1915. It was not reactivated - now as the Städtische Filderbahn - until October 28, 1929, when the connection to the Stuttgart tram was also established.

After Möhringen was incorporated into the city of Stuttgart on April 1, 1942, the station name changed to Stuttgart-Möhringen .

On May 15, 1944, the Stuttgarter Straßenbahnen AG (SSB) stopped passenger traffic from Möhringen to the Vaihingen train station and the tram trains only ran to the center of the town.

In 1967 the Möhringen – Vaihingen freight traffic was given up and the three- rail track was replaced by an ordinary meter-gauge track. In 1981 the route was finally rededicated to a tram route in accordance with the tram construction and operating regulations (BOStrab). As early as 1990, two three-rail tracks were available again, at that time light rail operations began on the U5 and U6 lines in standard gauge. Until 2008, the route continued to serve meter-gauge trams as access to the main workshop in the SSB center in Möhringen.

Rail operations

The station has four platform tracks on two outside and one middle platform and is served by the lines U3, U5, U6, U8 and U12 of the Stuttgart city railway. All trains coming from Degerloch in the direction of Vaihingen, Fasanenhof and Leinfelden stop on platform 1 . On track 2, which shares a central platform with track 3, trains run towards Degerloch city center. Track 3 serves the U3 line in the direction of Vaihingen, track 4 in the direction of Plieningen .

Two sidings for light rail trains starting and ending in Möhringen are directly adjacent to the passenger station. Most of the trains on the U12 line will continue to use them until May 2016.
