Otto Weil (born June 26, 1884 in Friedrichsthal (Saar) , † February 20, 1929 in Saarbrücken ) was a German painter and graphic artist.

Life

Otto Weil was born as the son of the host Heinrich Philipp Weil. In 1888 or 1889 he moved to Saarbrücken with his family. As a schoolboy he made his first attempts at painting. In 1901 he passed his Abitur at the Ludwigsgymnasium in Saarbrücken.

In the same year, Weil completed a degree in architecture at the Technical University of Karlsruhe . Against his father's wishes, Weil also studied at the Karlsruhe Art Academy with Ludwig Schmid-Reutte . From Karlsruhe he moved to the Munich Art Academy , where he became a student of Ludwig von Herterich , Gabriel von Marr and Franz von Stuck . He traveled to Spain with his fellow student Edwin Scharff between 1908 and 1909. In 1911 he stayed for some time in the Worpswede artists' colony .

In 1913 Otto Weil married Elvira Herde. They had a son together, Otto Hans Felix Weil. In 1914 the young Weil family moved to Saarbrücken. When the First World War broke out, he was called up to the infantry in Forbach and lived there with his family. During the war he worked as an illustrator for the front newspaper »Der Stosstrupp« and designed postcards and posters.

In 1917, Weil put together his first exhibition together with the Saarland artist Hermann Keuth .

After the war ended, Weil returned to Munich, where he lived on Agnesstrasse and moved into a studio on Schellingstrasse . He accepted Fritz Zolnhofer as a student.

Weil's wife died in 1920. He himself moved to Nymphenburg.

In 1922, Weil was one of the founding members of the Association of Visual Artists on the Saar. In the same year he married the goldsmith Johanna Speckner. With her he had a daughter, Hannelore, in 1924. Weil lived in Holzhausen am Ammersee and made regular trips to the Saar region. He exhibited his paintings in the Lorenz Raber bookstore in Neunkirchen and sold them through the bookseller he was friends with.

In 1927 and 1928 he participated in exhibitions of the New Munich Artists' Cooperative . Otto Weil died in Saarbrücken in 1929.

Weil's works are shaped by the style of late impressionism . His painting is z. Partly connected to the Saarland through the regional motifs . There are connecting lines to the Saarland artists Albert Weisgerber and his student Fritz Zolnhofer .

Some of Otto Weil's work came to the USA after Weil's daughter emigrated in 1939 . Today a collection is in the possession of his granddaughter in Basel. Another part of the work was acquired in 1974 by the Neunkircher Tourist Office, which exhibited the works in 1979, 1991 and 2009.
