action
Quasimodo, the bell ringer of Notre Dame, was accepted as a deformed foundling in the 15th century in Paris by the provost of Notre Dame Frollo, known as a sorcerer, and trained as a bell ringer. Quasimodo leads a lonely existence in the cathedral, but longs for the life that goes on outside in Paris. When he dared to take this step one day, he was pilloried and humiliated by the people because of his strange figure. Only the beautiful gypsy Esmeralda feels sorry for the creature and helps Quasimodo. This instantly falls in love with the beautiful woman, who, however, loses her heart to the captain Phoebus. But even Frollo, Quasimodo's teacher, falls in love with Esmeralda and becomes madly jealous because she does not hear him: He takes Esmeralda and Phoebus prisoner because they allegedly opposed him and thus the state. Now Esmeralda is to be burned as a witch. Quasimodo does not allow that, however: Despite the disappointed love he frees the two and kills his master by pushing him from the roof of the cathedral. Thus Quasimodo gives up the role of victim and finally manages to free himself from the walls of Notre Dame.
