Jerzy Jeszke (born November 2, 1958 in Bytów , Poland ) is a Polish actor and singer . He is successful as a musical actor .

Live and act

In 1976 he began a four-year study of acting and singing at the "Studio" Danuta Baduszkowa and graduated in 1980 with distinction.

From 1976 to 1987 he worked in Poland at the Music Theater in Gdynia , State Operetta Theater Roma in Warsaw , Music Theater in Chorzów and the State Opera in Wroclaw . From 1987 to 1992 he had his first engagement outside Poland, initially as a choir and solo singer, from 1990 as a solo artist at the music theater in Oberhausen, which is why he moved to Germany . In 1992 he received a diploma for opera singers ( Chamber Opera , Vienna ). In 1993 he was a guest singer at the Opera Spanga , the Opéra Royal de Wallonie , the Opera Obihiro and the Vienna Chamber Opera .

After a final casting in London in 1994 , organized by Sir Cameron Mackintosh , Jerzy Jeszke was selected as "Chef im Ring" for the German premiere of Miss Saigon in Stuttgart , initially as an understudy, then as first cast for this role.

In 1996 he appeared as the first cast in the role of "Jean Valjean" at the world premiere of Les Misérables at the Musiktheater in Duisburg and received the Tony Award (1996, Best Musical). He represented Germany in this role at the international gala for the tenth birthday of the musical Les Misérables , which was staged in 1995 in London's Royal Albert Hall , as well as at the closing ceremony of the 1996 European Football Championship at Wembley Stadium in London. Here he appeared as one of 17 "Jean Valjean" actors in the world. In 1997 he guest starred as "Jean Valjean" in the Polish production of Sir Cameron Mackintosh at the Gdynia Music Theater . From March 1998 he could be seen as a guest star in the title role in Phantom of the Opera . After successfully completing the casting on Broadway in New York City and Hamburg, he took on the role in the first cast at Theater Neue Flora in Hamburg in January 1999.

At the beginning of 2002 Jerzy Jeszke played the role of "Boss in the Ring" as a guest star in Miss Saigon at the Roma Music Theater in Warsaw , Poland. In October 2002 he took part in the premiere of the musical production The Castle in Nuremberg , in which he appeared in the role of "King Duncan". From March 2003 he played the role of "Jean Valjean" in the new production of Les Misérables at the Anhaltisches Theater in Dessau. From December 2003 he embodied “Chagal” in the first line-up in the new production of the cult musical Tanz der Vampire under the direction of Roman Polański at the Neue Flora Theater in Hamburg.

In 2006 Jerzy Jeszke decided to gain new artistic experiences without comfort and glamor. As a street artist, he performed for the poor and the homeless in European cities. At the beginning of 2007 he shifted his artistic interest towards Iberia. In Mallorca he presented his live solo program “Broadway Live Show”, also for the José Carreras Foundation. From October 2007 he could be seen again as "Chagal" on the stage of the Theater des Westens in Berlin . At that time he played the role of "Jesus" in Jesus Christ Superstar at the Musical Comedy in Leipzig . He played "Chagal" in the first line-up in Tanz der Vampire from November 2008 to January 2010 at the Metronom Theater in Oberhausen and from February to September 2010 at the Palladium Theater in Stuttgart . In addition, he appeared - as in the 2007/2008 season - in the role of "King" in the musical The King and I at the Anhaltisches Theater in Dessau .

From September 2010 he guest starred the role of "King Arthur" in the Polish premiere of Monty Python 's Broadway musical hit Spamalot at the Gdynia Music Theater . In November 2011 she starred in the TVN TV series Warsaw Pact as "Wolf", and in February 2012 in the TVP TV series M jak miłość . From May 2012 he played as a special guest the role of “Beadle Bamford / Mr Fogg” in the Broadway musical hit Sweeney Todd at the Chorzów Music Theater .

From July 2012 he played the role of "Chagal" in the new production of the musical Tanz der Vampire under the direction of Roman Polański at the Theater des Westens in Berlin, as well as in October 2012 at the international gala on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of this musical . He was also cast as "Chagal" in the modernized version of Tanz der Vampire at the St. Gallen Theater from February 2017.

Jerzy Jeszke is the founder of the Jerzy Jeszke Art Foundation . This non-profit organization helps and promotes young and talented artists.

Condemnation

On Friday, August 28, 2020, Jeszke was sentenced to three years in prison. According to the Bochum district court , Jeszke is said to have drugged his ex-girlfriend with knockout drops in May 2019 and then raped her. The following day, the victim discovered a recording device under the couch that documented the attack. Jerzy Jeszke had remained silent about the allegations to the last and was arrested in the courtroom.

At the start of the trial, it also emerged that Jeszke should have owned 525 child pornographic photos and videos.

Repertoire and engagements

Jerzy Jeszke's repertoire ranges from chansons to musicals and opera to rock and pop music . Engagements and concerts in Germany , Poland , Italy , the Netherlands , England , Spain , Portugal , Turkey , Mexico , Egypt , Czech Republic , Russia , Tunisia and Japan were stations in his career.

Since his debut at the age of 17, Jeszke has appeared in more than 60 premieres in six languages, in opera as well as in modern musicals. He played u. a. "David" in the musical Seesaw by Cy Coleman , "Judas" in Jesus Christ Superstar by Andrew Lloyd Webber , "Prince Sou-Chong" in The Land of Smiles by Franz Lehár , "Caramello" in One Night in Venice by Johann Strauss , “Pinkerton” in Madama Butterfly by Giacomo Puccini , “Jontek” in Halka by Stanisław Moniuszko and the “Hoffmann” in Hoffmann's stories by Jacques Offenbach .

In addition to appearances on television and radio, he sang at galas ( Royal Albert Hall ; Wembley Stadium, London; Kongress-Halle, Warsaw; Castel Gandolfo, Rome; Schloss Bellevue , Berlin; José Carreras Foundation, Mallorca ).

He was hired exclusively for Pope John Paul II , Roman Herzog , Mikhail Gorbachev , Lech Wałęsa and US political advisor Zbigniew Brzeziński .

Jerzy Jeszke's music is on the CD of the German production of Les Misérables as "Jean Valjean" and on his own CDs Who I am? and tell me why? with hits from musicals, classic pop and classical music.
